Primary School Nonfiction
“Ditch Dewey”
• Summer of 2013 reorganized Nonfiction
section based on:
• Research and findings of other libraries
• CCLS
• Intention of increasing circulation of
nonfiction
• Increasing functionality of nonfiction
area and making students more self-
sufficient
Primary Nonfiction Reorganization
• Books are organized by subjects
• Each book has picture and words
instead of a number
• Students have ease of access
• Increased nonfiction circulation
• Students can find their own
materials
Current Primary Statistics: Book check-in
Fiction Nonfiction
5/2/14 7 35
5/27/14 5 27
5/30/14 13 34
Primary Circulation
• Fiction circulation used to
exceed nonfiction circulation 2
to 1
• New CCLS curriculum stresses
nonfiction reading
• Nonfiction reorganization has
increased circulation from that
area to 5 to 1, in favor of
nonfiction
Current Primary Statistics: Book check-out
5/30/14 Fiction Nonfiction
1st Grade 4 19
2nd Grade 3 17
2nd Grade 8 10
• Students are taking more
nonfiction than fiction
• Last year, students leaned toward
fiction
• Students are more able to:
• Find resources they want to read
about in nonfiction after the
reorganization
• Feel more motivated to search
independently
• Can better utilize their book checkout
time with limited help

fiction
• Students find the nonfiction
section cumbersome and
difficult to find what they want
• They can use the OPAC, but can’t
find what they need on the
