Some activities that CRCAIH provided me with during this internship experience include:
ŸCRCAIH 3rd Annual Health Research Summit ŸSisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Reservation and Headquarters
-Research and Sovereignty -Woodrow Wilson Keeble Memorial Health Care Center
-Unraveling the Mystery of an IRB Review -Sica Hallow State Park
-Addressing Tribal Public Health Needs -Nicollet Observation Tower
ŸMoving forward, we hope to make the appropriate changes to the toolkit in order to better adapt to the general audience. That way, we hope to increase research capacity among
research and most specific, tribal communities. Overall, great learning experience working among Native American research and the CRCAIH Methodology Core.
The Collaborative Research Center for American Indian Health
(CRCAIH):
• Formed in September 2012 with a grant from the National
Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities
• Brings together tribal communities and health researchers
within SD, ND and MN
• Goal: to build tribal research infrastructure and trans-
disciplinary research teams to improve American Indian
health through examination of social and environmental
influences on health
Methodology Core1:
• Consults on the planning and design stages of studies
• Provides data management services
• Provides training opportunities for tribal communities and
researchers in current data management methods
• Advice on: 1) Study Design 2) Data collection from design
3)Report generation 4) Statistical Analysis
CRCAIH works among various tribes to collaborate on research
methods, research techniques and much more. The
Methodology Core decided to create the first CRCAIH
Research Data Toolkit to increase and strengthen research
capacity and collaboration among SD, ND and MN
communities. In addition, requests for research data
management and storage options were made from several tribal
partners. These requests initiated this project to better expand
on CRCAIH resources, specifically within research data
management.
Objective: Although this project is still in progress, we look
forward to share the toolkit with surrounding communities to:
• Increase understanding of how essential data research
maintenance is for quality research work3
• Improve collaboration among tribal communities in SD, ND,
MN
• Encourage progress in tribal research
Special thanks to the Maternal Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student
Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP) for providing a great research
program. Grant funding for this program was awarded to Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a national consortium of
institutions and universities build on LEND training framework & CDC-funded RISE grant.

• Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
• Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate
• Oglala Sioux Tribe
Methods
Subject areas the Research Data Toolkit provides include:
• “Procedures for Data Storage”- Stick to schedule when backing up data,
document procedure for plan of execution, initiate plan for backing up
data, etc.2
