UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACCEPTS SNIPER XR
ADVANCED TARGETING POD FROM LOCKHEED MARTIN
ORLANDO, FL, August 18, 2003 – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT]. The Sniper XR team
delivered two more pods for the Advanced Targeting Pod (ATP) program last week. Kenneth
Fuhr, ATP Program Director, complimented the Sniper team for resuming deliveries to the U.S.
Air Force. "Our program team has been working hard to meet all Air Force objectives. Perfecting
Sniper now means the warfighter will be able to take advantage of the superior capabilities of the
world's most advanced targeting pod."
The U.S. Air Force is flight testing four Sniper pods the next several weeks at Nellis AFB,
Edwards AFB, and Luke AFB. These risk reduction flight tests provide verification of software,
laser ranging, laser spot tracker, and other features. In addition, pod maintenance and repair
training will be conducted at Eglin AFB.
According to George Daugherty, ATP Product Support manager, "The good news is that
Sniper sets a new record for fast pod repair times. The better news for the Air Force is that
Lockheed Martin guarantees unprecedented pod reliability and availability. We are looking
forward to beginning the familiarization process for Air Force maintenance personnel."
Sniper XR (eXtended Range) is the pod of choice for the US Air Force’s F-16CJ Block 50
aircraft and the Air National Guard's F-16 Block 30 aircraft. Incorporating a 3rd generation
targeting forward-looking infrared, Sniper XR's common aperture and exceptional stabilization
result in superior image quality. The modular, two-level maintenance design provides for lowest
life cycle costs.
Incorporating a high-resolution, mid-wave 3rd generation FLIR, a dual-mode laser and a CCD-TV
along with a laser spot tracker and a laser marker, Sniper vastly improves target
detection/identification. The advanced image processing algorithms, combined with rock-steady
stabilization techniques, deliver three times the performance of the best systems in service today.
In August 2001, The U.S. Air Force selected Lockheed Martin to develop and build the Sniper
XR pod for the ATP program. The contract provides for up to 522 pods and associated
equipment, spares, and support for both the Air Force and Air National Guard.
Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control develops, manufactures, and integrates world-class
air defense, fire support, strike weapon, naval munition, combat vision, anti-armor, and advanced
product solutions and systems for U.S. and international armed forces.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 125,000 people worldwide
and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of
advanced technology systems, products and services.
