The first choice most people make when planning a home theatre
is whether it will be located in a dedicated room or a multipurpose
space. Both have their advantages. Read on . . . .
PLANNING YOUR HOME THEATER
ROOM CHOICE, SCREEN TYPE AND FORMATS
IS A DEDICATED HOME THEATRE
RIGHT FOR YOU?
A dedicated home theatre is focused
solely on the viewing experience. The
room may be equipped with theatre
seats, a popcorn machine, even a
marquee. Usually there are no windows,
so light control is not a problem. The
screen is generally fixed in position.
THEATRE IN YOUR MEDIA
ROOM?
Or living room, bedroom, dining room,
great room, or family room!
When you incorporate the home
theatre into a multipurpose space,
you have many options. The screen in
a multi-purpose home theatre needs
to disappear. This is easiest with a
motorized projection screen. Draper
screens can be integrated with the master
control or home automation system.
Draper offers a wide variety of motorized
screens. For maximum flexibility, choose
the exclusive, patented Access system.
You will probably have windows in the
room, so you need effective light control.
Consider Draper FlexShades. Fully
opaque shades in a variety of fabrics
install next to the glass, behind your
decorator window coverings, or
even on the outside of the window.
Motorized units are compatible with
whole-house automation systems, and
are the most energy-efficient type of
window coverings, depending on the
level of control you desire.
IS A REAR SCREEN BEST FOR
YOUR HOME?
Rear projection screens are an excellent
option for a dedicated home theatre.
Rear screens remove the projector from
the viewing room and allow significantly
brighter light in the theatre. However, rear
projection requires a space behind the
screen for the projector.
CONCEALING YOUR PROJECTOR
Another issue in a multipurpose home
theatre is concealing the projector. Draper
offers a wide variety of lifts to conceal a
projector above the ceiling, in walls, or
in other spaces unique to your home. All
are motorized, have numerous control
options, and are compatible with home
automation systems. Draper also offers
Custom Lifts able to conceal virtually any
type of AV equipment and reveal it in ways
limited only by your imagination.

FACTORS INVOLVED IN CHOOSING THE CORRECT PROJECTION SCREEN
SCREENS CHOOSING A SIZE & VIEWING SURFACES
The ideal screen size allows people in back to read text easily, while
people in front can see the entire screen without turning their heads.
Draper has launched many new surfaces and improved all of your old
favorites with tightened tolerances and testing in Draper's viewing
surface testing lab.
COMMON PROJECTION
FORMATS
Your screen width should be based on the
height of the screen and the projection
formats to be used. Draper screens are
commonly offered in the formats shown
at left. Other formats including custom
formats and sizes are available.
VIEWING AREA HEIGHT
Ceiling height
The bottom of the screen should be
approximately 39”—47“ (100—120cm)
above the floor. This rule may not apply
in a tiered seating area or where there
are only one or two rows of seats. In
rooms with a high ceiling, extra “drop”
may be needed to lower the screen for
comfortable viewing. Projector, room
design, and other considerations may
affect screen selection.
Commercial / Education
Movies and films—Screen height should
be at least 1/6 the distance from screen
to furthest seat.
Charts and data—Screen height should
be at least 1/4 the distance from screen
to furthest seat.
Complex graphics—Screen height should
be at least 1/2 the distance from screen
to furthest seat.
Home Theatre
For movies and TV—Screen height should
be at least one-third the distance from the
screen to the best seat.
EXAMPLE:
Our standard self-supporting Matt White
surface is named Matt White XT1000E,
and is part of the OptiView family of
viewing surfaces.
Viewing Cone:

Moderate (M)
Controlled (C)
Contrast:
Typical (H),
High (H),
Superior (S)
Gain:
Peak gain is shown
multiplied by 1,000. Matt
White XT1000E has a gain
of 1.0
Family:
A suffix of V indicates a flexible surface
suitable for tensioning. A suffix of E indicates
a self supporting (non-tensioned) surface.
VIEWING SURFACE FAMILIES
& NAMES
When selecting a viewing surface, first
choose the viewing surface family.
Viewing surfaces are divided into five
distinct families: OptiView, OptiFlex,
ClearSound, and CineFlex and
TecVision. After selecting the family,
the viewing surface name helps you
complete your selection. The name
consists of a short descriptive phrase
followed by an alphanumeric code which
informs you about the viewing cone,
contrast, gain, and family.
Every lot of projection screen surface
material is thoroughly tested in our
in-house lab before it is released for
manufacturing.

THE ACCESS CONCEPT
Install case now, screen later. Easy
Installation, Easy Access! A Draper
innovation, the essence of the ACCESS
concept is a ceiling recessed, folded
steel headbox designed to be installed
during construction. The screen itself
(viewing surface attached to a roller) can
either be furnished with the headbox
or at any time thereafter. Hinged door
makes installation and service easy.
Access FIT features a low-profile case to fit in smaller spaces. The
Access comes in sizes, up to 16’ wide, with an efficient profile to
maximize space. New hinged door cover makes installation and
service easier.

WHY TECVISION?
When Draper committed to offering a line
of revolutionary new surfaces, we started
with exhaustive research. TecVision was
born as we researched many competitive
surfaces, explored the chemistry of
screen surfaces and refined processes
to manufacture screen surfaces to
much stricter tolerances for unparalleled
performance and quality.
HOW DID WE DO IT?
Our dedicated TecVision production
and lab staff, using custom designed
equipment, constantly monitors the
process, performing multiple checks to
ensure TecVision surfaces remain within
tolerances which ensure the highest
picture quality possible.
When it comes to consistency of gain,
contrast and gloss across the entire
screen no viewing surface anywhere
offers better uniformity than our TecVision
surfaces.
TecVision XT1000X White
It is engineered for blending applications,
precise resolution, color accuracy and a
remarkably broad viewing cone. XT1000X
White performs best where ambient
light is controlled. We call this 4K-ready
surface a “reference” screen because it is
extremely close to what Silver and the ISF
use as a “reference” for testing.
TecVision XH700X Grey
This screen has an on-axis gain of 0.7
and performs very well in situations where
moderate ambient light is present, when
optimal uniformity is desired, and wide
viewing angles (blending images, even on
curved screens).
TecVision XH900X ALR*
With an on-axis gain of 0.9 this screen
performs best in moderate to high
ambient light and wide viewing angles.
TecVision MS1000X ALR*
An on-axis gain of 1.0 translates to
great performance in situations where
moderate to high ambient light is present.
NEW! TecVision XH1200X ALR*
On-Axis Gain of 1.2 CH1200X. Best for
use in spaces with high ambient light and
narrow off axis seating configurations.
TecVision XT1100X White
This screen has an on-axis gain of 1.1.
It is recommended when projector
brightness and screen size dictate the
need for a modest increase in brightness.
TecVision XT1300X White
With an on-axis gain of 1.3 this screen
performs best where ambient light is
controlled but projector brightness is
slightly lower than desired.
TecVision XT1600X White
With an on-axis gain of 1.6, this screen
performs best where ambient light is
controlled but projector brightness is
moderately lower than desired.
TecVision XT1800X White
An on-axis gain of 1.8, translates to great
screen performance where ambient light
is controlled but projector brightness is
significantly lower than desired. XT1800X
White is perfectly suited for active 3D or
color combining passive 3D systems.
*Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) surfaces
with reflective components reject ambient
light best.

This new system is not only better,
it is much nicer looking. Making a
tab tensioned surface in this manner
significantly reduces the puckering that
has characterized the edges of tab
tensioned screens made by Draper and
other screen manufacturers for years.
We believe this new system represents
a unique and significant improvement in
tab tensioned screen design. We cycled a
tab tensioned screen made in this manner
over 30,000 times with no tab failure.
We are so confident of this new system

SURFACE FAMILIES FOR USE IN A VARIETY OF SETTINGS.
SCREENS
OPTIVIEWTM
These surfaces are all self-supporting and
do not require tensioning to perform well.
They are generally installed on motorized
or manual roller screens with a dowel
below the screen surface. Most surfaces
in this group have a tearproof fiberglass
textile base and are very sturdy and
suitable for use in a variety of settings.
Three of these surfaces are Greenguard
certified and our high performance
XS850E is ISF certified.
OPTIFLEXTM
These surfaces are suitable for tensioning
and are available on permanently
tensioned screens and/or tab tensioned
roller-operated screens. Choose OptiFlex
for the flattest viewing surfaces. OptiFlex
surfaces include: ReAct MX100V, perfect
for use in multi-purpose spaces where
the lighting is hard to control and the
screen needs to be out of sight when not
in use.
CLEARSOUNDTM
ACOUSTICALLY
TRANSPARENT
ClearSound surfaces are designed to
allow sound through and still perform
well optically. Standard and microscopic
perforations are available, and the
innovative woven acoustically transparent
(AT) fabrics. With self-supporting and
tensioned surfaces, almost any Draper
projection screen model can be provided
with a ClearSoundTM
viewing surface.
Acoustically transparent surfaces are not
recommended for use in screen sizes
less than 80” wide. These fabrics have
a recommended seating distance for
optimal viewing.
CINEFLEXTM
Draper has offered a CineFlex flexible
rear projection surface for many years.
CineFlex surfaces are available on a wide
range of permanently tensioned, portable,
and tab tensioned projection screen
models. Our offering of rear projection
can meet a broad range of prjector and
room situations.

  • 2. 800.238.7999 residentialtechnology.draperinc.com/ 3 ® The first choice most people make when planning a home theatre is whether it will be located in a dedicated room or a multipurpose space. Both have their advantages. Read on . . . . PLANNING YOUR HOME THEATER ROOM CHOICE, SCREEN TYPE AND FORMATS IS A DEDICATED HOME THEATRE RIGHT FOR YOU? A dedicated home theatre is focused solely on the viewing experience. The room may be equipped with theatre seats, a popcorn machine, even a marquee. Usually there are no windows, so light control is not a problem. The screen is generally fixed in position. THEATRE IN YOUR MEDIA ROOM? Or living room, bedroom, dining room, great room, or family room! When you incorporate the home theatre into a multipurpose space, you have many options. The screen in a multi-purpose home theatre needs to disappear. This is easiest with a motorized projection screen. Draper screens can be integrated with the master control or home automation system. Draper offers a wide variety of motorized screens. For maximum flexibility, choose the exclusive, patented Access system. You will probably have windows in the room, so you need effective light control. Consider Draper FlexShades. Fully opaque shades in a variety of fabrics install next to the glass, behind your decorator window coverings, or even on the outside of the window. Motorized units are compatible with whole-house automation systems, and are the most energy-efficient type of window coverings, depending on the level of control you desire. IS A REAR SCREEN BEST FOR YOUR HOME? Rear projection screens are an excellent option for a dedicated home theatre. Rear screens remove the projector from the viewing room and allow significantly brighter light in the theatre. However, rear projection requires a space behind the screen for the projector. CONCEALING YOUR PROJECTOR Another issue in a multipurpose home theatre is concealing the projector. Draper offers a wide variety of lifts to conceal a projector above the ceiling, in walls, or in other spaces unique to your home. All are motorized, have numerous control options, and are compatible with home automation systems. Draper also offers Custom Lifts able to conceal virtually any type of AV equipment and reveal it in ways limited only by your imagination. 16:9 HDTV 1.85:1 WIDESCREEN 2.35:1 CINEMASCOPE 16:10 X T E1000 FACTORS INVOLVED IN CHOOSING THE CORRECT PROJECTION SCREEN SCREENS CHOOSING A SIZE & VIEWING SURFACES The ideal screen size allows people in back to read text easily, while people in front can see the entire screen without turning their heads. Draper has launched many new surfaces and improved all of your old favorites with tightened tolerances and testing in Draper's viewing surface testing lab. COMMON PROJECTION FORMATS Your screen width should be based on the height of the screen and the projection formats to be used. Draper screens are commonly offered in the formats shown at left. Other formats including custom formats and sizes are available. VIEWING AREA HEIGHT Ceiling height The bottom of the screen should be approximately 39”—47“ (100—120cm) above the floor. This rule may not apply in a tiered seating area or where there are only one or two rows of seats. In rooms with a high ceiling, extra “drop” may be needed to lower the screen for comfortable viewing. Projector, room design, and other considerations may affect screen selection. Commercial / Education Movies and films—Screen height should be at least 1/6 the distance from screen to furthest seat. Charts and data—Screen height should be at least 1/4 the distance from screen to furthest seat. Complex graphics—Screen height should be at least 1/2 the distance from screen to furthest seat. Home Theatre For movies and TV—Screen height should be at least one-third the distance from the screen to the best seat. EXAMPLE: Our standard self-supporting Matt White surface is named Matt White XT1000E, and is part of the OptiView family of viewing surfaces. Viewing Cone: Extra Wide (X) Moderate (M) Controlled (C) Contrast: Typical (H), High (H), Superior (S) Gain: Peak gain is shown multiplied by 1,000. Matt White XT1000E has a gain of 1.0 Family: A suffix of V indicates a flexible surface suitable for tensioning. A suffix of E indicates a self supporting (non-tensioned) surface. VIEWING SURFACE FAMILIES & NAMES When selecting a viewing surface, first choose the viewing surface family. Viewing surfaces are divided into five distinct families: OptiView, OptiFlex, ClearSound, and CineFlex and TecVision. After selecting the family, the viewing surface name helps you complete your selection. The name consists of a short descriptive phrase followed by an alphanumeric code which informs you about the viewing cone, contrast, gain, and family. Every lot of projection screen surface material is thoroughly tested in our in-house lab before it is released for manufacturing.

  • 7. 800.238.7999 residentialtechnology.draperinc.com/ 13 ® WHY TECVISION? When Draper committed to offering a line of revolutionary new surfaces, we started with exhaustive research. TecVision was born as we researched many competitive surfaces, explored the chemistry of screen surfaces and refined processes to manufacture screen surfaces to much stricter tolerances for unparalleled performance and quality. HOW DID WE DO IT? Our dedicated TecVision production and lab staff, using custom designed equipment, constantly monitors the process, performing multiple checks to ensure TecVision surfaces remain within tolerances which ensure the highest picture quality possible. When it comes to consistency of gain, contrast and gloss across the entire screen no viewing surface anywhere offers better uniformity than our TecVision surfaces. TecVision XT1000X White It is engineered for blending applications, precise resolution, color accuracy and a remarkably broad viewing cone. XT1000X White performs best where ambient light is controlled. We call this 4K-ready surface a “reference” screen because it is extremely close to what Silver and the ISF use as a “reference” for testing. TecVision XH700X Grey This screen has an on-axis gain of 0.7 and performs very well in situations where moderate ambient light is present, when optimal uniformity is desired, and wide viewing angles (blending images, even on curved screens). TecVision XH900X ALR* With an on-axis gain of 0.9 this screen performs best in moderate to high ambient light and wide viewing angles. TecVision MS1000X ALR* An on-axis gain of 1.0 translates to great performance in situations where moderate to high ambient light is present. NEW! TecVision XH1200X ALR* On-Axis Gain of 1.2 CH1200X. Best for use in spaces with high ambient light and narrow off axis seating configurations. TecVision XT1100X White This screen has an on-axis gain of 1.1. It is recommended when projector brightness and screen size dictate the need for a modest increase in brightness. TecVision XT1300X White With an on-axis gain of 1.3 this screen performs best where ambient light is controlled but projector brightness is slightly lower than desired. TecVision XT1600X White With an on-axis gain of 1.6, this screen performs best where ambient light is controlled but projector brightness is moderately lower than desired. TecVision XT1800X White An on-axis gain of 1.8, translates to great screen performance where ambient light is controlled but projector brightness is significantly lower than desired. XT1800X White is perfectly suited for active 3D or color combining passive 3D systems. *Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) surfaces with reflective components reject ambient light best. Nine Draper viewing surfaces—in fact the entire exclusive TecVision® line—have been certified by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) for excellent color reproduction and fidelity. MAKING AN IMPACT IN THE SCREEN INDUSTRY AND YOUR VIEWING EXPERIENCE TECVISION OUR PREMIER SCREEN SURFACE 4KREADY! 4KREADY! All TecVisionTM surfaces offer superior quality, consistency, uniformity and are 4K ready. Vewing surfaces are certified by the Imaging Science Foundation for excellent color reproduction and fidelity. For more information about this strict industry standard visit: imagingscience.com This new system is not only better, it is much nicer looking. Making a tab tensioned surface in this manner significantly reduces the puckering that has characterized the edges of tab tensioned screens made by Draper and other screen manufacturers for years. We believe this new system represents a unique and significant improvement in tab tensioned screen design. We cycled a tab tensioned screen made in this manner over 30,000 times with no tab failure. We are so confident of this new system New tab tension system Previous tab tension system Unique Features of the Draper Tab Tensioning System CNC CUT AND RF WELDED TABS ENSURE LONG LASTING SMOOTH SURFACE SCREENS TAB TENSIONED –– Viewing surface (including the tabs) is CNC cut as a single piece. –– Tabs are folded to the rear of the screen and RF welded–no adhesives. –– Tabs are much stronger–no chance of separation. –– Smooth and attractive, with no puckering in the black matte viewing surface border. –– Warranted for 5 years against tab separation. that we warrant all Draper tab-tensioned screens against tab separation for five years from date of manufacture. SURFACE FAMILIES FOR USE IN A VARIETY OF SETTINGS. SCREENS OPTIVIEWTM These surfaces are all self-supporting and do not require tensioning to perform well. They are generally installed on motorized or manual roller screens with a dowel below the screen surface. Most surfaces in this group have a tearproof fiberglass textile base and are very sturdy and suitable for use in a variety of settings. Three of these surfaces are Greenguard certified and our high performance XS850E is ISF certified. OPTIFLEXTM These surfaces are suitable for tensioning and are available on permanently tensioned screens and/or tab tensioned roller-operated screens. Choose OptiFlex for the flattest viewing surfaces. OptiFlex surfaces include: ReAct MX100V, perfect for use in multi-purpose spaces where the lighting is hard to control and the screen needs to be out of sight when not in use. CLEARSOUNDTM ACOUSTICALLY TRANSPARENT ClearSound surfaces are designed to allow sound through and still perform well optically. Standard and microscopic perforations are available, and the innovative woven acoustically transparent (AT) fabrics. With self-supporting and tensioned surfaces, almost any Draper projection screen model can be provided with a ClearSoundTM viewing surface. Acoustically transparent surfaces are not recommended for use in screen sizes less than 80” wide. These fabrics have a recommended seating distance for optimal viewing. CINEFLEXTM Draper has offered a CineFlex flexible rear projection surface for many years. CineFlex surfaces are available on a wide range of permanently tensioned, portable, and tab tensioned projection screen models. Our offering of rear projection can meet a broad range of prjector and room situations.
