Urban Sustainability Social Media Plan October 8, 2015
Event Summary and Positioning:
Summary
We will explore how planning for and expanding green infrastructure, such as parks, open
space, street trees, planting by homeowners, and green roofs, can help communities address
and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Our September event focused on Smart Cities and
building structures and this event will go a step further on the personal space level. Urban
Sustainability is being sponsored by Virginia Tech’s Center for Leadership in Global
Sustainability (CLiGS). We will also partner as a co-host, along with Arlington Green, and the
International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP). The event will be held on Thursday,
October 8, from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., followed by a Networking reception which includes a
cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres. A dance performance by the Bowen Dance Company will
take place following the networking reception.
Positioning
The event will focus on the following topics:
Expanding green infrastructure
How to plan for parks, open spaces and green communities
How community leaders interact with homeowners
Using the MapIt Tool for crowd sourcing
COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES
Messaging
The messaging will all focus on this one event. Messages will be imbedded in the details
surroundings speakers, location, companies, discussion topics, blog articles and related articles
to this event.
The session will:
Describe the County’s built and natural environments.
Demonstrate how to assess and quantify the benefits that could accrue from enhancing
the County’s green infrastructure, in particular its urban tree canopy.
Include a group discussion, using decision-support tools, on how leadership, innovation,
and negotiation skills can enable local leaders to engage stakeholders, develop and
implement a comprehensive response to climate change that works for their community.
