Inthetraditionalenterprisesoftwarespace,thefactorsinfluencingbuildvs.buydecisionsareobvious.Whenenterprisesneedsoftwaretoautomateapartoftheirbusiness,typicallytheyfirstlookforanoff-the-shelfpackagethatmeetstheirrequirements. Someoftheconsiderationsthatleadtoabuydecisionaretime-to- market,proventrackrecord,communityofinterest,andpotentiallycost.Ifapackagethatmeetsallormostoftherequirementscan’tbefound,enterpriseslooktobuildingthesolutionthemselves.Ofcourse,therearesomeadvantagestobuilding:thesolutionisbuilttoexactspecifications,youcontroltheroadmap/priorities,sourcecodeisowned,etc.Butasanyenterprisethat’severtakenthebuildroutecanattest,theroadhasmanybumpsthatdon’talwaysmeettheeye.

Figure1showstheenterprisemobilematurityevolutionandthetoolsetsenablingit.Theenterprise’sforayintomobilitystartedwithconsumerapplications.Companieswantedtoreachcustomersontheirmobiledevices.Thefastest,easiestandobviousdecisionwastorenderbrowser-basedapplicationsasmobilewebapps.Thisenabledcompaniestoquicklyconnectwithcustomerswhowerelookingforthemusingmobiledevices.Mobilewebappswereagoodinitialsteptoprovideinformationtocustomers.Butthisapproachdoesn’tlenditselftotransactionalapplications,nordoesitprovidetheuserexperience(UX) consumersareusedtowithothermobileappsandgames. 
Soenterprisesshiftedtobuildingnativemobileappsinordertoleveragenativedevice/OScapabilities,andprovideabetterUX.Howeverwithnativeappdevelopmentcamethechallengesofdevice/OSfragmentation,andtheneedtoreplicateapplicationdevelopmentformultipleOSplatforms.Thischallengeissomewhatmanageablewithconsumer-facingappssincetherearerelativelyfewersuchappsperenterprise.

Withtheadventofbusiness-to-employee(B2E)mobility,thefocusbecamethesecurityofdevicesanddata,andthemanagementandcontroloftheoverallenterprisemobileplatform.B2Emobilitystartedwithsecureaccesstoenterpriseemailandcontentonmobiledevices.FromthisnaturallystemmedafocusonMobileDeviceManagement(MDM) solutions.MDMsoonbecameanecessaryfirststepforenterprisemobility.But,MDMsolutionsonlyprovidedtheinfrastructurerequiredforenablingsecureB2Emobility. 
Asbusinessesrecognizedtheobviousbenefitsofthelatestmobiletechnologyandapplications,thedemandforB2Emobilesolutionsacrosslinesofbusinessstartedtogrow.Typically,thesedemandscamefromlineofbusinessowners.Withthegrowingdemand,ITorganizationsstartedtolookatbetterwaystocreateandmanagemobileapplicationsintheB2Espace.Someofthechallengesweresimilartothoseforconsumerapplications, suchasfragmenteddeviceandOSplatforms–anissuefurtheraccentuatedbytheBYODwave.However,thereweremoreseriouschallengesforB2Emobileapplicationsrelatedtobackendintegration,andsolutiondeploymentandmanagement.
Asinthecaseofconsumermobileapps, enterprisesbegandownaDIYpathforB2Eapplications–buildingtheirownmobileappswithin-houseresourcesand/orexternalconsultants.Withthegrowingdemand,enterprisessoonrealizedtheyneededamoresustainableapproachtobuildingandmanagingapps.Forsometime,B2EmobileapplicationshavebeenfocusedonprovidinganewUIfortraditionaldesktopsoftware.Andlikemobilewebapps,thesehavefailedtomakefulluseofthetechnologyordeliverthescopeofpotentialbenefits,suchasimprovedproductivityandefficiency,real-timevisibilityandworkflow,differentiatedcustomerandemployeeexperiences, andreducedoperatingcosts.
