damage or injury to the brain caused by an
external force, such as a blow or jolt to the
head or a penetrating object that disrupts the

 Falls: Falls are the leading cause of TBI, especially among children and older
adults.
 Motor vehicle accidents: Car accidents, motorcycle accidents, and pedestrian
accidents can result in TBI when the head strikes an object or experiences a
sudden impact.
 Assaults: Physical attacks, such as those that occur during fights, have the
potential to cause TBI.
 Explosive blasts: Military personnel and civilians exposed to explosive blasts

 Closed Head Injury: Occurs when the head is struck or jolted, but the skull
