Built Environment (n): The human-made spaces and places in which we live, work, and play.
What is VIBE?
VIBE is an 8-week long summer program for 7th
-12th
grade students around Greater Cincinnati. VIBE empowers
students to take on more active roles in their communities by equipping them with the tools of community planning
knowledge. We promote vibrancy and provide civic leadership development programming for youth. Students gain
a better understanding of the built environment that they interact with daily, how different aspects of it work together
to create our urban experience, and leave prepared to participate in their communities more effectively.
Purpose:
Spark curiosity within the minds of youth in regards to community/urban planning and design. To get youth to
Think more critically about the built environment and empower them to become agents of change.
Bridge gaps- Bring together youth from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds for an enhanced
learning experience.
Re-think youth engagement- We believe that youth can change the world NOW if given the proper tools.
Early exposure- Possibilities are endless and we give youth more for options to consider for their future.
Mission:
To increase the number of diverse, community oriented, culturally and economically aware citizens and civic
professionals who advocate for themselves and others. And to make adults take youth voices more seriously.
Vision:
To be a national leader in enhancing the world of planning by engaging more youth voices in decision
making processes and also to diversify the faces of the planning industry.
Values:
Curiosity Diversity & Inclusion Resourcefulness
Methods:
Seminars | Field Trips | Project-based learning
Students meet twice a week for 4hrs. Each week, students will learn a different community planning concept
which they can easily relate to in their daily lives. The first day of VIBE is an intensive summit where students
learn about neighborhoods and participate in team building exercises. Following that, students meet every
Tuesday and Thursday for the remaining 8 weeks. Tuesday is seminar day. We invite a guest presenter who
works in a field related to the theme of the week to lead a discussion with students. Thursday is field trip day.
This is when students get to experience the concepts they read about and discussed in seminar in action. Field
trips include site tours, panel discussions, and interactive practice. Students have an opportunity to work on a
multimedia project which showcases different voices in the built environments of Cincinnati neighborhoods.
