The event planners were challenged with hosting 450 guests for a reception in the small lobby of the Stuart Street Playhouse. They considered adding an outdoor tent to expand the space but that option was too costly and did not comply with city regulations. Instead, they discovered a room inside the building that could be converted to a tent space, avoiding permitting issues. They installed a large clear-walled tent inside this room that was decorated with red lighting to create an intimate reception space, disguising the true nature of the indoor room.

Challenge:
Although the client was committed to using the Stuart Street Playhouse there
was no room for 450 guests in the lobby for the reception. After considering
the addition of a tent to the back of the building to enlarge the lobby , it was
determined the cost and city regulations exceeded the benefit of the limited
extra square footage .
Solution:
On discovering the existence of raw space off the lobby, currently housing a
golf school, we reconsidered the tent—we increased the size and brought it
into the building where the City of Boston didn’t need to be involved.

Iced martinis and backlit screens were the only Red lighting up-lit the walls of the space to create a red glow in the
visions guests saw en route to the tent tent. Lighting under the tent roof disguised the true nature of the
space. The white roof was also used as a projection screen.
