2. Which do people prefer:
grilled or fried chicken?

3. Introduction & Background
In a recent national survey, a thousand Americans were polled to
see which they preferred: grilled or fried chicken. Roughly, 78% said
they preferred fried chicken to grilled chicken. We will conduct our
own survey at a local restaurant (Zaxby’s on 901) that serves both
types of chicken. We will compare the results of both the surveys &
test for a significant difference at the .05 significance level.
4. Hypothesis
We believe that the results of our survey will be
significantly different than those of the
national survey.
H0: p = .78
α = .05
Ha: p ≠ .78
Represents the proportion of
the population who chose fried
chicken over grilled chicken
5. How We Conducted
Our Experiment
For scheduling reasons, we randomly pulled ONE survey day from a
hat. The hat included 7 slips of paper – one for each day of the
week. Having randomly chosen Tuesday from the hat, we surveyed
those entering the restaurant at 2889 Heckle Blvd from 5-7p.
Furthermore, we randomly selected whom we surveyed by means of
coin flipping. Should the coin land on heads, we polled the person.
Should the coin not land on heads, we would forego polling the
person. The sample size was unregulated & stood at the mercy of
the crowd size at Zaxbys during the survey duration.
6. The Results of Our Experiment
Number of Respondents: 87
* Nobody declined participating
in the survey
Proportion: 74 13
Expected:
per the national survey statistic of 78%, the
proportion of responses should have reflected
the following based on a sample size of 87:
68 19
Fried Grilled
FRIED
85%
GRILLED
15%
9. Testing for Significance
We utilized a chi-square test to compare our survey statistic to the
national survey statistic & test for statistical significance.
10. Our Conclusion
After conducting our survey and performing a Chi-Square test on the
data collected, we have concluded that our results are not
statistically significant. We failed to reject H0 and cannot conclude
that the results of our survey are significantly different than those of
the national survey.
We believe that our geographic region may have positively skewed our
data results, thus explaining why our survey resulted in a greater
“preferred fried chicken” proportion than the national survey did. This
is based solely on the stereotype that southerners are fried chicken
connoisseurs.
Should we conduct a similar survey in the future, we may wish to
survey multiple restaurants at multiple times in attempt to reduce
underlying confounding factors.
11. Much to our dismay, Zaxby’s did not
sponsor or endorse this survey.
