This reference has been written as evidence that James Bullen has completed over 50 hours a week
towards the residential aspect of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. James was employed by Camp Tioga
in a seasonal position from June 12th
to August 13th
2016. James was employed as a general / specialist
counsellor at Camp Tioga, a residential sleep away in Pennsylvania USA. The job of a camp counsellor is
a diverse role with a lot of dedication and responsibility. From the moment the children wake up to
when they go to bed, all counselors are responsible for the constant supervision and safety of our
campers.
As a general counselor, James would take the campers from his cabin to each of their activities, meals,
and anything else that children required, he would be required to always make sure they we safe,
accounted for, and having fun. He would also have to deal with any issues that may have arisen and
either solve them or seek help from the appropriate line supervisor.
In his specialist role James was employed as a lifeguard and being responsible for running part
of the waterfront program at camp. This involved giving the children swim instruction lessons
and ensuring the camps standards of safety were not compromised. The role also included
maintaining the pool to comply with health and safety protocols.
James was required to work as part of team to ensure all the children had the best summer possible. He
had to work with people he had never met and from different backgrounds and made the transition
without any issues. James was responsible for getting the children to the correct places on time and
with the correct equipment. In his role James was also required to write a daily report on each of the
children which helped the director when communicating with family members of the campers; this was
always produced on time and to an exceptional standard.
James took his position very seriously, but never lost sight of having fun with the children. He has a
passionate, outgoing personality which definitely inspires others. I would not hesitate to recommend
James for any position as I feel his hard working mentality would be an asset to any company or course.
