Capitol Semester Internship 2015 – Areas of Responsibility
1. SessionLetters to Constituents
 There are 22 constituent groups including: Teachers, Doctors, Veterans, Small Business Owners, etc.
o Bill Lists are legislative summaries of bills tailored to the interests of specific constituent groups
 Collaborated with community leaders, colleagues, lobbyists, and Delegates to achieve the following:
o Write and revise a narrative to summarize and highlight the impacts of specific bills based on the
different constituent groups’ interests
o Research bills and compile lists of bills applicable to specific constituent groups
o Update bill statuses to ensure that our listings were current
o Over 29,000 individual pieces of mail were sent out to constituent groups
 Supervised the pages’ assembly of signed letters and additional attachments
 Formatted bill listings for each constituent group
 Made suggestion on adding an addition group – First Responders
2. School Group Visits to the Capitol
 Half Day visit to House Committees, Capitol tour, guest speakers, and view of General Assembly
Session from the Gallery
 Spoke to 2 high school groups totaling over 150 students on the internship experience; topics include:
o Virginia Capitol Semester Program
o The role of an intern at the General Assembly
o Possible tasks assigned
o Benefits of interning and becoming involved in the community
 On the program schedule with prominent Delegates, journalists and lobbyists
 Assisted in leading student groups when needed
3. Track Legislation – From Introduction to Passage
 Check for bill updates and status change notifications on Delegate Cox’s legislation
o If Delegate Cox has a bill with a status update, changes are noted on our “bill board”. The board
tells us, at a glance, where the bill is in the process. If a status update is needed it is updated on
the board and my supervisor is notified.
 Check Legislative Information Systems (LIS)
o LIS is checked for committee and subcommittee meeting agendas
o If and agenda is published on LIS, it is inserted into Del. Cox’s committee and subcommittee bill
binders.
o LIS is also checked for bills referred to committees that Del. Cox sits on. (House Appropriations,
Rules, Joint Rules, and three Appropriations Subcommittees) If bills are referred, the bill is
ordered from the Bill Room and the summaries and fiscal impact statements are printed and
inserted into the bill binders by type of bill and number order for quick reference.
 Check Daily Published Calendar
o Check the calendar for the status of Del. Cox’s legislation on first, second, or third reading.
o Mark the status, bill number, and page on the cover of the printed calendar for quick reference
by the Delegate
4. Constituent Services
 Meet with various constituents and lobbyists who visit the office to voice their opinions for or against
specific bills that are before the General Assembly
 Fill out Constituent Contact forms to document my meetings with constituents and lobbyists and place
in Constituent Contact binder
 Attach any literature or business cards to constituent forms for future reference
 Visited the Virginia Women’s Republican luncheon and met with Constituents from the 66th District
5. Other Activities
 Provided internship orientation to future high school intern, Ryan Leopold
o Capitol Tour, overview of LIS, Microsoft Word and Excel training, etc.
 Interned for Del. Cox beginning in early August 2014 to the start of Session in the 66th District field
office
 Attended two pre-session legislative aides orientation and training sessions – outside of VCS program
 Moderated incoming constituent calls on two of Del. Cox’s Telephone Town Hall Meetings
 Viewed and attended Sessions, committee meetings, subcommittee meetings, and press conferences

 Documented and photographed Del. Cox’s meetings with constituents and press conferences for
publication on website and social media outlets
 Attended events with key political leaders
o Majority Leader’s Kick Off Session Reception
o Randy Forbes’ Breakfast Fundraiser
