LaChapelle is lauded as one of our
greatest contemporary photographers.
His work is often characterized by its
eccentricity and focus on pop culture.
Nearly every photo of LaChapelle’s
features someone of note. His work has
featured the likes of Michael Jackson,
Lady Gaga, Jimmy Fallon, Shaquille
O’Neal, Kim Kardashian and many
more.

4. Early Life & Career
● Born in Hartford Connecticut in 1963
● Hired as a photographer for Interview
Magazine by Andy Warhol when he was
just 17
● Rose to prominence in the 1990’s because
of his controversial works, including his
“Kissing Sailors” advertisement for Diesel
● He has since opted to focus exclusively on
his own work, having hosted nine fine-art
photography exhibitions across the globe
since 2009
● Mostly known for his portrait work
7. My Personal Opinions
I personally find LaChapelle’s work
extremely captivating. His beautiful
portraits, while glossy, also tend to
accentuate the human condition. I
particularly admire his criticisms of
modern consumerism and popular
culture in his work. I decided to choose
him in particular because: A) I was
already a fan of his and B) I believe his
work tends to perfectly encapsulate the
eccentricities of contemporary art and
culture.
