4. Setting
At the Bondurant brothers gas station
Jack Bondurant is attempting to make sense of a new way to distil moonshine to
Bertha Minnix and Floyd Banner.
His idea is being questioned by Bertha Minnix.
5. Jack Bondurant (major): Petruchio
Both are looking to achieve success through economically beneficial situations
Petruchio made Kate’s father question his mannerisms when he showed up to
the wedding in inappropriate attire, just as Jack Bondurant made Bertha
Minnix’ father do the same by arriving at church drunk.
They are both individuals who are noticeable different from the other characters
in the story
6. Bertha Minnix(major):Katherine
Both Bertha Minnix and Katherine are pursued by men that embarrass them,
Kate is pursued by Petruchio and Bertha Minnix is pursued by Jack
Bondurant
Both have strict Fathers
Each of them yearns to rebel against cultural norms.
7. Charley Rakes(minor): Vincentio
Charley Rakes is a traveler to the town he is in just as Vincentio is a traveler in
Padua.
Charley Rakes and vincentio have little to know personal relationships with the
main characters in each story
Both men disrupt a plan in each story the are in, Vincentio arrives only to reveal
that someone has been pretending to be him, while Charley Rakes arrives in
town to close moonshining operations.
8. Floyd Banner(minor): Hortensio
Both have little minor roles in their stories
Hortensio assists Petruchio, while Floyd Banner assists crime syndicates.
Floyd banner escorts Jack bondurant out of a would be grave, just as hortensio
escorts Petruchio and Kate to Baptistas
9. Act IV scene 5
The Bondurant gas Station
[Jack is explaining new crime related ideas to Bertha, and Floyd, Bertha struggles
to understand Jack’s ideas]
Jack: Come Bertha, I’ll explain again, but I aint doin’ it again, we can use the
south stream to hide the operation
Bertha:Weren’t ya just sayin’ how we could of done had it in the North stream?
Jack: No no no, I told you the the North Stream would be best.
10. Bertha: I’m no fool, I know you said the north stream
Jack: No, I am no fool, I know what I done said, and that is the south stream, if ya
want to be foolin’ me we can ditch the whole operation altogether. I said the south
stream women, you can accept that or we can part our ways you hear?
Floyd: Say as he says or we’ll never get this operation runnin’ on its feet.
Bertha: alright alright, you said the South stream, excuse me. I misheard what you
rambled about, if you say ya said the South stream, you said the south stream, I
aint gonna doubt you no more.
11. Jack: Yes, ma’am, the South Stream it is.
Bertha: I know, you said the South Stream.
Jack: You lying to me wretched women, I said the North Stream.
Bertha: For christ sake, it’s the North Stream then, you don’t even have any clue
to what you done said. Your damn ideas change with your attitude, you have not a
clue what you said, and i got no clue what you said, It could be the damn Bertha
Stream if you were in the right mood.
Floyd: Jesus, Jack give it up, she doesn’t care.
12. Jack: Well shall we continue our little talk then, but quietly, someone’s coming
maybe they’re lost, don’t look like they’re from ‘round here.
[enter Charley Rakes]
[to Charley Rakes]
Good evenin’ sir, how may I assist you on this fine evening, tell me Bertha have
you seen a more well dressed bootlegger than the one before us? I mean he’s got
himself a fancy watch, a loaded heater and tie. This guy has to do hard business.
Again good evenin’ fine sir. I mean appreciate that thuggish swagger Bertha.
13. Floyd: Jack, this is an officer of the respected law, you’re going to upset him.
Bertha: He’s a slick gangster. The ladies must love ‘em deep in town. You are
completely right Jack, look at this guy, just his appearance wages business
exchange
Jack: Wo, now settle Bertha, you’re talking to an officer of the law show some
respect, this isn’t some rich street gangster.
Bertha:Excuse me sir, I was almost certain that I had seen you as a quick witted
gangster.
14. Jack: What direction are you headed officer maybe one of us respectable work
men can point you in the right direction?
Charley: I am looking for the Bondurant Gas Station, I can’t seem to find it, I am a
special detective from out of town.
Jack: And why is it that?
Charley: I hear that the nice ol’ country boys here produce some profitable
moonshine.
Jack: Well the boys around here are experts in their own sense, and I sir happen
to be a bondurant brother and the land you stand on is our gas station. We only
only produce moonshine if youre a customer, if youre the law, we run a gas station
15. Jack:we have been in this business our whole lives and you sir need some money
to let us continue this business so how is that for an idea?
Charley: But is it true? Will you provide me with the proper payment so you can
continue this less than satisfying business of yours?
Floyd: He’s no liar, the boy never told a lie in his life
Jack: Come with me Mr. Rakes, we have you all sorted out in no time
[exit all but Floyd]
Floyd: Jesus Jack, I hope you know what youre doing
