Jamaica's 2030 vision based on goals set out by the government. It is expected that achieving these goals will help Jamaica be the place to live, work, and do business. This vision speaks to an enhanced economy, equality in education and opportunities as well as safety especially as it relates to crime and violence in the small caribbean island.

3. What is vision 2030?
Vision 2030 Jamaica is the country’s first long-term strategic development
plan and covers the 21 years period 2009-2030. It embodies the plans and
processes for the realization of a collective vision, encapsulated in the
statement: “Jamaica, the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do
business”.

4. The Four Goals of Vision 2030
Vision 2030 Jamaica has four (4) National Goals. These goals are to ensure
that:
1. Jamaicans are empowered to achieve their fullest potential
2. The Jamaican society is secure cohesive and just.
3. Jamaica’s economy is prosperous.
4. Jamaica’s has a healthy natural environment.

The National Outcomes:
1. Healthy and stable Population
A healthy and stable population speaks to easily accessible healthcare being
provided and access to information that will allow the population to make
good decisions relating to their health.
6. Goal Number 1: Jamaicans are empowered to
achieve their fullest potential
This can be achieved through voluntary and community service projects such as;
• beach and community clean ups that foster a clean environment and stops the
spread of diseases such as dengue fever and leptospirosis which can stem from an
unclean environment.
• Community groups may create service projects such as free health fairs where
lifestyle diseases and how they can be prevented are discussed.
• The renovation of various health centers by volunteers to assist in the comfortable
and effective care of patients at these facilities.

• The contributions these projects would make to the
population would give rise to a healthy population who
can have stability while working and raising their families

2. World-Class Education and Training
• Education and training has long been a source of social mobility
• The acquisition of education and training has afforded many the ability to
rise to their full potentials
• World class education and training can be provided through community
service and voluntarism

• Persons who have specialized in technical and vocational areas such as
welding, mechanic and carpentry in community can create a program
targeting mainly male high school dropouts. These qualified persons will
assist in mentoring and grooming these young men to get certified.
Therefore, this action of volunteerism will assist in reaching the national
outcome of world-class education and training initiative.

Not only can individual volunteers and community groups play their part but
the private sector can as well.
They may offer help by :
• Offering free classes to at risk youth
• Offering funding to worthy students who are underprivileged to pursue
higher education or acquire skills.

3. Effective Social Protection
Social protection covers the range of policies and programmes needed to
reduce the lifelong consequences of poverty and exclusion. (UNICEF)
This includes ensuring that inspite of social and financial background or
disability all members of the Jamaican society feel a sense of inclusion and
have a fair chance of success.

This can be achieved through volunteerism and community service in several ways;
these include:
• The creation of foundations and organizations by volunteers that specifically recruit
marginalized groups, such as those with low financial status or disabilities. Training
and equipping them to give back to gain a sense of inclusion in the building of the
country
• The provision of grants and programmes by community groups to uplift the life of
those who are marginalized.
• The voluntary mentoring of marginalized individuals to offer inclusion and
guidance to a more fulfilling life.

4. Authentic and Transformational Culture
With Agenda 2030, culture is viewed as a cross cutting theme
related to education, sustainable cities, food security, the
environment, economic growth, sustainable consumption and
production patterns, peaceful and inclusive societies.

This culture encapsulates all forms of community service and volunteerism at
different levels.
The voluntary cleaning of our environment, the offering of grants by private
sector companies, volunteering in mentorship programmes and taking part in
community group activities that offer inclusion are all captured in this authentic
and transformational culture which will allow Jamaicans to reach their full
potentials.
15. Goal Number 2: The Jamaica Society is sure,
cohesive and Just.
The National Outcomes:
1. Security and Safety
This outcome speaks to sustainable cities and communities as well as peace
and justice. This can be achieved through voluntary acts of service such as;
• Taking part in community neighborhood watches to ensure a safe and
crime free community
• Becoming a JP who can take part in justice related issues in the
community to stop possibilities of violence before they take place

2. Effective Governance
This outcome seeks to bring about gender equality, general equality and peace and
justice. Individuals can give their service in several ways to promote these goals. For
example;
• Youths can become involved in organizations that actively work towards
transforming frameworks and policies to promote equality whether by gender or
socially.
• Volunteering at non profit organizations that seek to ensure peace and safety e.g.
Organizations that fight against domestic abuse.
17. Overview
In conclusion, the Vision 2030 plan requires the hands and hearts of every
Jamaican, as through community service and volunteerism these goals can be
met and will make Jamaica the place of choice to live, work, raise families and
do business.
