2. Proposal 1
My first proposal is a box designed for paintbrushes. The box will include geometric designs on the
outside as decoration, assembled from different shades of wood. The design is meant to loosely
represent cubism and the work of Picasso. I decided that the shell of the case would be fairly
simple, if it was too intricate then it would take away the focus from the design. I thought that the
tones of the wood would be significant as Picasso liked to use neutral tones in his work, as well as it
would give the case balance. I also gained inspiration from the designer Rachael Whiteread, who
was known to create casts of negative spaces; the linear value and depth in her work gave me the
idea to have the repetitive geometric shapes. This proposal can be developed by experimenting
with various materials or giving the illusion of one texture when it is another, as wood can be a
heavy material for a case. I would also alter and refine the design of the pattern so that it would
flow more.
3. Proposal 2
My second proposal would be similar to the first but there would be a difference in the design;
there would be an aspect of a Picasso painting such as Sylvette in order to create a more direct link
to the artist. Additionally I would have a different style opening to the box so that it accentuates the
angles used in the pattern. Picasso is such an important aspect to this product as his work is
displayed in the permanent collection in the Albertina, giving a direct link to the client. This design
could be altered by having various tones and an alternative colour palette so that it can become
more interesting and inviting to the target audience. Like the first proposal, this design can be
developed by experimenting with different materials to make it lighter and more mobile.
4. Packaging
The packaging for these designs would be fairly simple due to the
intricacy in the design. The packaging would have to have significance
to the product, so apart from the design of the title, I think it would be
appropriate for the design of the packaging to be of a similar shape to
the product. Furthermore, it would be fitting to have the packaging
clear or partially clear so that the products design and detailing is easily
visible and can catch the eye of the target audience.
5. Chosen Proposal
I have decided to proceed with proposal 1 due to the fact that I find it
contains the most diversity in the way of the design, allowing me to
make either large or small alterations depending on the development. I
intend to look into the product material and tones to suit the target
audience in the best way possible.
