Isaac Kremer presented work supported by AARP in Metuchen, New Jersey, in 2020. This included the New Streetery that expanded outdoor dining opportunities during the pandemic, including wind, snow, and fire rated structures that extended outdoor dining into the winter.

This presentation was viewed by over 1,000 webinar participants nationally who were preparing to apply for the Community Challenge Grant in 2022.

23. Metuchen’s story is an example of what a community can
do when it comes together. “I think our local leaders, from
the mayor on down, have shown the power of what good,
local, effective governance can do in striking the perfect
balance between safety coming first, but also supporting
and protecting your local businesses,” Honig said. “There’s
a real pride that people take in the town with the success

• AARP support helped to add 142 tables and 474 chairs to outdoor dining options
• Lighting enhancements exceeded our goal by 170% thanks to add on corporate funding
• Started to build a parklet, built the “New Streetery” instead
• Work highlighted by 13 media outlets and 56 articles
• Secured an additional $655,628 through Main Street New Jersey
• 138 business starts including 34 since beginning of pandemic
• Livable communities team working on future quick action projects in Metuchen
