2. The 2016 Project
Inspire is a community-focused project made up of a series of activities. The
main objective is to encourage open-mindedness and tolerance amongst
Kingston residents and inspire them to think differently. By thinking differently
we mean dealing with prejudices and stereotypes that are held about others in
our community who come from different groups or backgrounds.
Workshops starting Summer 2016:
The Diversity Game – Taking the form of an App, the ‘Diversity Game’ is a
quiz that participants are able to play not only at Quilombo UK’s events
and workshops but also anytime and anywhere online. The questions aim
to unveil the unconscious bias of participants towards people and groups
from other cultures and backgrounds. It is aimed at fighting stereotypes and
challenging the way people think. Do not worry if you score low – we all have
preconceptions. Quilombo UK will help you think differently!
TreasureHunt– This activity promotes and encourages community cohesion
by offering individuals and groups the opportunity to learn about other
cultural communities and to explore culturally rich areas around the borough.
Participants will use an App to navigate all four Kingston neighbourhoods in
teams and will follow clues to get to important locations. Whoever completes
the challenge first will gain a prize and priceless insight into local cultural
treasures.
Community Scene – Flash mobs held in the borough, at Quilombo UK and
other local events, aim to raise awareness in the community about misjudging
individuals based on their appearance or background. These short scenes
present different scenarios that showcase the social injustice of our society.

3. About Quilombo UK
Who we are
We are Social Marketing Agency (doing marketing for the well-being of
society, not for profit) based in Kingston-upon-Thames, with strong links to
the community in which we work. Through Creative Activities, Quilombo
UK seeks to challenge people to think differently in order to connect
communities and build a culturally rich, homely society where differences
are not just accepted, but celebrated.
The need to ‘inspire’ our community
Kingstonisadiversecommunity:thepercentageofBAMEcitizensin2011was
26%, compared to 14.1% in England and Wales as a whole. Nevertheless, an
issue that has been mentioned frequently in our discussions with our partners
and from past projects, is that despite its multiculturalism, there is a lack of
integration amongst groups, which can lead to isolation and discrimination.
We hope to encourage individuals to stop and think about these things.
We seek to inspire the community to change their behaviour. We want to
encourage them to acknowledge how their preconceptions, often borne
out of the media or social environment, can unconsciously lead to prejudice
and discriminatory behaviour.
Our Overall Vision
Thinking differently
Our name “Quilombo” derives from a multicultural community in Brazil
comprising of slaves and those who disagreed with slavery. Their community
was integrated through culture, music and dance. This reflects our aim of
a united community supported by open-mindedness. Inspire is one step of
many towards a more integrated Kingston. We believe that change starts
with us and our community. As we grow over the years as an organisation,
however, we hope to gain more influence and pursue projects in London
and throughout the United Kingdom.
Differences of habit and language are
nothing at all if our aims are identical
and our hearts are open.

4. Past Projects
We have been active in the community since 2009, hosting workshops for
schools, colleges, and our local communities, which included a project with
the homeless, connecting them with the local community and services. Most
recently, we ran our first big project, ‘Celebrating Freedom’ which impacted
over 1,500 different individuals but also included talks by influential figures
such as the Mayor of Kingston, local councillor Dennis Doe and the Head of
Kingston Race & Equality Council, John Azar. Organisations like the Kingston
RefugeeActionandinstitutionssuchasKingstonCollege&KingstonUniversity
have recognised the successes of our events and signalled their support and
desire to work more closely with us, which has fuelled our ambition to go
further.
Get Involved
The more people we get involved, the stronger our community
becomes. We seek support in all forms from strong and influential
voices to be ambassadors of our message to local students and
residents participating in our events or volunteering to help organise it.
We rely on a small team of volunteers, so please do contact us if you
want to be part of Quilombo UK and engage to enhance the Kingston
community!
Community Benefits
We are hoping to hold each event in all four neighbourhoods in the
Kingston borough, in the aim of reaching as many people as possible, as
well as increasing unity on a neighbour-to-neighbour level. We will do this by
working directly with the neighbourhood managers of Kingston Council and
hosting neighbourhood specific events in order to target participants who
are less likely to be engaged - civic engagement tends to lead to further civic
engagement, something that would be very beneficial to the community.
We aim to directly reach 1,500 residents throughout the Inspire Project.
We will also produce a short documentary that we will promote through
local and social media. We envisage this reaching many more people in the
local area and beyond, being an informative tool, and encouraging open-
mindedness and thinking differently.
The Inspire project builds on another successful project we ran in 2014 -
“Celebrating Freedom”, which too was aimed at bringing the community
together and breaking down barriers. In the same way, we anticipate that the
findings from Inspire will go on to be used to host other creative projects that
go towards meeting the objectives of Quilombo UK.
You have to taste a culture
to understand it.
