2. WHAT IS DELPHE?
Sponsored by the UK Government's Department for International
Development (DfID) and managed by the British Council (BC).
The programme provides funding to support partnerships between
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) working on collaborative
activity linked to the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The overall goal is to enable HEIs to act as catalysts for poverty
reduction and sustainable development. DelPHE aims to achieve
this by building and strengthening the capacity of HEIs to
contribute towards the MDGs and promote science and technology
related knowledge and skills.
£3 million a year has been invested in the (DelPHE) Program.
3. General Information
Partners: University of Khartoum, Sudan - University of
Reading, United Kingdom
Title:Developing educational and professional courses in
sustainable construction, engineering, management and social
housing in Sudan
Summary/ Aim: The overarching aim of this project is to
advance the education and sound practice of construction
management in the Sudan and further contribute to the UN MDGs
specially the areas of sustainable social housing and women
empowerment.
4. Aim: to advance the education and sound practice of
construction management in the Sudan and further contribute to the
UN MDGs specially the areas of sustainable social housing and
women empowerment.
Overall objectives:
to develop and deliver specialised undergraduate,
postgraduate and CPD courses targeted at students,
practitioners and governmental bodies in the Sudanese
Construction Industry;
promote exchange of ideas, academic materials and
publications in construction management;
host joint workshops and international conferences;
promote staff and student exchanges for personal and
professional development;
establish joint research projects and joint supervision of
postgraduate students specially PhD students.
5. Outputs:
Development and delivery of joint undergraduate,
postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development
courses in construction management and social sustainable
housing with a focus on empowering women for the
advancement of the construction industry in the Sudan.
Joint publications and field work particularly in construction
management and sustainable social housing with priority case
studies for social housing in Khartoum, Southern Sudan
(Juba city) and Darfur (Elfashir city)
Organization and hosting of two workshops annually and
end of project conference for the promotion of construction
management organization and Sustainable development in the
Sudan and for information and cultural exchange with the UK.
6. Outcomes:
Advancing the role of women in the Sudanese construction
industry and the integration of professional from Southern
Sudan and Darfur regions.
Revision and establishment of undergraduate and
postgraduate programs leading to the provision of sound
educational courses, well qualified practitioners, and coherent
governance framework including the accreditation of the
Chartered Institute of Building.
Establishment of global partnership, improved networking
and exchange of information channels which promote building
capacity and help improving the teaching and research and
thus contribute to solving the problems of the construction
industry and provision of sustainable housing in the Sudan.

8. BC Feedback on Application:
Subject Adviser described proposal as a “good project proposal and
good value for money”. He felt the team has necessary expertise and
background for project.
Risk factor was minimal.
Proposal would add value to current sector approach for
advancement of education and sound practice of construction
management in Sudan
Project would have positive impact on lives of primary beneficiaries
National three day workshop was highlighted as being a very good
way to consolidate project’s activities and celebrate its successes
