'Image Terrain’ is an online Web
2.0 technology focusing on “On
demand” surface design
development.
It enables a designer to upload
any digital image file, photograph
or design, apply it within the
Image Terrain process and create
hundreds of new structured
design layouts instantly. These
include plaids, stripes, borders,
graphics, refined elements and
motifs as well as repeating
patterns.
The artist can then create private
galleries to store their designs for
future use or integrate their new
designs with other applications
like Photoshop or U4ia.
Each user has their own private
account.
3. “Source Image Gallery”
Begin by storing original reference
images and designs in the your
“Source Image Gallery”. These
images can range from scanned
photos to original hand-painted
designs or any graphic digital
image file.
Now select any image to process
by clicking on the green icon to the
bottom right of each image and
create hundreds of new co-ordinate
designs.
Let’s select the Geo called “Bart” in
the bottom row and view the
results.
4. Selecting a design and applying the
Image Terrain process
Image Terrain allows you to
select the entire reference
image or just a portion of it
and apply the process.
In this example we have
chosen the right top corner of
the design as displayed in the
history thumbnails at the top.
Now you can select from any
of the six categories to the
right of the large thumbnail
image.
Each one of these categories
yields hundreds of co-
ordinate designs. Let’s see
what “Primary Patterns” look
like.
5. Viewing the “Primary Patterns” category
Eighty design elements,
motifs and repeating
patterns display instantly.
Select any of them for
your project at hand or
store them as a collection
in your “My Image
Gallery”.
Remember, each design
is unique to your
reference image and
totally private to your
account.
Select a different portion
of your design and review
eighty new options.
6. “My Image Gallery”

Create beautiful textile design
co-ordinate patterns and
original designs to sell at Print
Source or Surtex.
8. Creating basic layouts from simple linear reference
Basic layouts can be
developed as initial
underlying design
foundations for
building complex and
layered designs.
Applying simple linear
concepts to the
Image Terrain
process creates a
myriad of outstanding
design layout options
to choose from.
9. Developing unique motifs and graphic elements
In this example an artist
created collections of
unique individual elements
and motifs based on four
different original reference
images…
All in just minutes!
10. Don’t stop ‘til you drop!.......
Keep designing. Each new
collection you create may reveal
the perfect new reference concept,
element, layout or design co-
ordinate you are searching for.
In this example the small area of
the design reference delineated in
the red outline was use to create
six different collections including
windowpanes, border designs,
plaids, stripes, unique single motifs
and a mélange of repeating
patterns.
Remember, you can use these
designs as they are or combine
elements and layouts as in the next
slides.
11. Creating a plaid collection with Renaissance colors
Creating patterns using color ranges
from the Renaissance era.
In this example we took an image of a
Giotto painting from the Public Domain,
put it through the Image Terrain process
and created 40 color relevant plaids to
the Renaissance era, instantly .
12. Creating a stripe collection for your Autumn theme
Creating the perfect Autumn stripe
co-ordinate
Now we can create stripe patterns using color
ranges from any season or era. Let’s try ‘Autumn’.
In this example we use a beautiful Autumn photo.
After applying the Image Terrain process, 40
beautiful color relevant stripes instantly display.
Image Terrain adds a level of excitement to any
project by introducing a huge variety of images to
select from.
13. Combining design elements and layouts (a)
In this example, an artist develops new designs by combining elements and layouts. Using a traditionally
hand painted floral allows you to quickly create a plaid and a unique motif with the Image Terrain process.
Use your skills in Photoshop to put them together.
14. Combining design elements and layouts (b)
Use Photoshop to combine two border concepts developed with the Image Terrain process. Placing
elements developed using the Scroll reference with the new denim border concept creates a new
repeating pattern.
15. Combining design elements and layouts (c)
Using a black and white ink drawing as reference a designer uses the I.T. process to create an
open windowpane layout. Next she develops a complex Matrix style design, all in seconds. She
selects a small motif (outlined in red) from the Matrix and places it in the windowpane layout.
Then, using Photoshop she creates
solid black circular elements and completes the new design.
