My first meeting with Ian Smith was in New Zealand in 1977 and in
association with my retail Nursery and Landscape business based in Gisborne
New Zealand.
Since his arrival in Australia in 1994, I have on numerous occasions been
closely involved in a number of the vegetation management projects that he
has undertaken.
I have found that he has a progressive approach to raising the performance
levels of his staff and the acquisition and application of the latest up-to-date
vegetation management strategies.
I have provided practical training workshops for his staff and periodically
have also provided Arboricultural advice on his behalf where special pruning
or other treatments were required to significant ornamental or other valued
trees.
During the past twelve months I was engaged by one of his clients Energex to
closely scrutinise and provide a professional assessment of his and his
company Tree Management Techniques Pty Ltd. services.
I was pleased to report to Energex that the work undertaken for them was
appropriate to the circumstances, efficient, cost-effective and of a high
standard.
I am aware that Ian Smith is highly regarded in New Zealand for his
knowledge and practical work associated with the identification and control of
the fungi Armillaria.
He is well known throughout Arboricultural and Horticultural circles in
Queensland for his work in the arena of Vegetation Management and for his
regular articles published in leading Arboricultural journals.
He has also presented papers to the Queensland Nursery industry etc.
Ian Smith is well travelled and has a world wide network of colleagues and
highly regarded experts within his field.
