• Ulcerative Colitis: 146.000 people in the UK
• Several treatment options, including different regimes of medical
therapy and different surgical procedures.

4. What is ileoanal pouch (J-pouch) surgery?
When surgery requires removing the entire large bowel, traditionally
patient required a permanent stoma bag.

5. What is ileoanal pouch (J-pouch) surgery?
• It is a complex operation to replace a very
specialised part of the large bowel (rectum).
Thanks to the J-pouch, patients do not
require the stoma bag
• In UK hospitals, this operation takes place on
average once a year.
• UK surgeons who perform pouch surgery, will
often perform only 1 procedure every 5
years.
• It is very difficult to develop expertise on
when, how to, when not, do this procedure
