The Arthritis National Research Foundation is the only charity solely focused on funding arthritis research to cure arthritis. With your help this arthritis foundation can support more arthritis research and find a cure. Please make a donation or get involved today!
2. How many of you have or
know someone who has
arthritis?
3. About the Arthritis National Research Foundation
• Founded 1952
• Mission: To provide initial research funding to brilliant,
investigative scientists with new ideas to cure arthritis
and related autoimmune diseases.
• Funding arthritis research to understand the causes,
preventions and development of new treatments for:
– Osteoarthritis
– Rheumatoid Arthritis
– Lupus
– Juvenile Arthritis
– Psoriatic arthritis
– Ankylosing Spondylitis
– other autoimmune diseases
4. Why it’s important to support arthritis research?
• 1 out of every 4 Americans suffer from some
form of arthritis
• An estimated 54 million adults and 300,000
children
• Newer scientists have new ideas and ask new
questions allowing us to get new results and a
greater understanding of these diseases
• NIH funding for newer scientists, with new ideas
is shrinking
5. How and why we fund young researchers?
• Bright, newer investigators bring new approaches and
ideas that can lead to a new answers, treatments, or a
cure
• The best new ideas and breakthroughs often have
come from those who are not yet established
– Einstein
– Newton
– Edison
• Dr. Granger’s discovery of TNF and Lymphotoxin is a
modern example that was funded by our foundation

7. Research Success
• Dr. Gale Granger
– Discovered specific molecules involved in the
inflammation and tissue destruction of rheumatoid
arthritis.
– Identified cell membrane and soluble TNF & LT
receptors that neutralize TNF.
– Discoveries led to a new treatment for RA and other
autoimmune diseases.
• Dr. Betty Tsao
– First person to link a specific human chromosome
region to increased risk of developing lupus.
• Dr. Denis Evseenko
– Dr. Evseenko and his team are using various
combinations of cells present in the joint to regenerate
cartilage. Currently in clinical trials, this work may
eliminate the need for total joint replacement surgeries.
8. Latest Research Successes
• Discovered a natural molecule in the body that regulates cartilage growth
• Transplant normal immune cells into joints to block disease progression
• New laser diagnostic tool to provide soft-tissue images
• Use of bone marrow stem cells to regenerate damaged bone
• Identified a growth factor in the body to promote healing of joint tissues
• Identified molecule that control the cells that form and destroy bone
9. Young Scientists Face The Worst Research Funding In 50 Years
Dr. Francis Collins, head of the National Institutes of Health on the funding crisis for younger scientists…
“This is the issue that wakes me up at night when I try to contemplate the future of where biomedical
research can go in the United States,” Collins said. “They are finding themselves in a situation that is the
least supportive of that vision in 50 years. They look ahead of them and see the more senior scientists
struggling to keep their labs going and suffering rejection after rejection of grants that previously would have
been supportive. And they wonder, ‘Do we really want to sign up for that?’ And many of them, regrettably,
are making the decision to walk away.”
10. Committed to Research
• 95% of grant recipients remain
in the research field
• Over 250 scientists funded
since 1970
• World-renowned Scientific
Advisory Board
• 12-15 grants funded per year
11. 9-STRAIGHT YEARS AS A 4-STAR CHARITY
• Exceptional: Exceeds industry standards and
outperforms most charities in its Cause.
• 9-straight 4-star ratings places ANRF in the Top 1% of
charities in America
• An independent review panel of scientific experts
reviewed the foundation and found the foundation
work “Extremely Successful” in fulfilling its mission
and they delivered the highest possible overall results
rating.
12. We Need Your Help
• Funds for new cutting-edge research ideas
from young scientists is shrinking
• We currently fund 12-16 grants a year, but
there are always more projects deserving of
funding than we can fund
• With more support, we can support more
research and accelerate the science towards a
cure
13. Why support the Arthritis National Research Foundation?
• Focus is on RESEARCH only
• Young investigators with cutting-edge
new ideas
• 4-star Charity
• We cannot fund all deserving projects
we review
• Insufficient funding for young scientists
from other major sources
