The novel and the movie “About a boy” 9 Hyo Ji Kim

In most cases, blockbuster movies are from best-selling novels. This
interesting data shows that successful movies are related to successful
novels. Around the world, there are many versions of novels and movies
which tells the same stories. This essay will talk about the differences
between the famous novel “About a Boy” which was written in 1998, and the
famous movie “About a Boy” which was made in 2002.

One of the differences between the novel and the movie is how the
characters are presented. To start with, Marcus, the main character has better
school life in the novel than in the movie. He got along with his friends in
Cambridge. However, he is bullied at his old school in the movie. In addition,
the character of Ellie in the novel has a very significant role. Because Ellie
breaks the window of a record shop, all characters gather, and they can solve
their relationship problems. In contrast, the movie doesn't show an
importance of Ellie.

Another contrasting factor between the novel and the movie is how the
events in the plot are presented. First of all, Fiona, Marcus' mom comes to
Will's flat with anger in the novel when she knows Marcus has visited Will's
flat everyday. On the other hand, in the movie, Fiona goes to the restaurant to
yell at him. Furthermore, the train station event is very important in the novel
by giving a chance for the characters to solve their relationship troubles.
However, there is no train station scene.

Most importantly, the novel and the movie have disparate conclusions.
To begin with, the resolutions of the conflict are completely different. In the
novel, the characters solve their relationship problems with each other at the
police station. In the movie, people become close again by the music concert
of Marcus and Will. Moreover, the location and the guests of the Christmas
parties are dissimilar. In the novel, the Christmas party happens in Fiona's
house with her friend, Suzie, and Suzie's daughter, Megan. Unlike the novel,
the Christmas party in the movie takes place in Will's flat without Suzie and
Megan. Instead of them, there are Rachel, Will's girlfriend and Ali, Rachel's
son.

In conclusion, the novel and the movie “About a boy” show contrasting
elements, such as how the characters and the plot are presented and how
the conclusion is demonstrated. Throughout doing this essay, I realized the
novel and the movie “About a boy” have their own unique characteristics.
Whether a person chooses the novel or the movie to get the story of “About a
Boy”, both of them grab your attention.
