This document discusses the different generations of programming languages from 1st to 5th generation and their levels of abstraction. 1st generation languages use machine language, 2nd generation use assembly language, 3rd generation use procedural languages like FORTRAN and COBOL, 4th generation use non-procedural languages like SQL and visual languages, and 5th generation attempt to use natural languages. Lower generations like 1st are closer to machine instructions while higher generations abstract further from hardware.
