Initiatives
3M adopted five initiatives that will help us consistently improve our business processes.
These initiatives will make 3M larger than the sum of our parts, increase our competitiveness and ensure future success.
Six Sigma: We are moving from many separate quality management systems to one Six Sigma methodology. Six Sigma provides a single approach and a common language we can all use – across the entire company – to improve the way we get things done. This will create a uniform, companywide approach shared by all 3M employees to advance our competitiveness and boost efficiency.
3M Acceleration: This initiative will help us develop and bring products to market faster through investment prioritization, cycle-time reduction and by leveraging our brand. We will be able to strengthen our returns by prioritizing our R&D investments across all of our businesses.
e-Productivity: "e" is made for big companies. We can improve 3M's efficiency and productivity and improve our links to customers and suppliers through the use of "e." Our goal is to rebalance the investment to get at the productivity.
Sourcing: 3M can achieve significant savings through better leveraging on purchasing power. Long term, we can save up to one-half billion dollars through buying smarter, through different ways of managing sole supply agreements, through geographic broadening of our supply and through the use of "e" to get leverage.
Indirect Costs: This is an across-the-board effort to significantly reduce costs not directly associated with products and services. Reduction of indirect costs is good, "old-fashioned" hard work and will help us reach the targets we have in place for all of the businesses.
