10. Notes on the data
The data used in this report is the open spending data published by every public sector buyer. Public sector entities
must publish their transactions with third party suppliers. Local government must publish all transactions over £500
and central government must publish all transactions over £25,000. This information is publicly available. Open Opps
has gathered this information, matched the suppliers to Companies House records and categorised the suppliers by
sector.
This report uses the spend data published from January 2012 to March 2017 available as of August 2017.
In these reports ‘Central Government’ refers to the 17 ministerial departments existing before July 2016 as well as
arms length bodies.
Since July 2016, the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Department for Business, Innovation and
Skills merged to form the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and the Department for Existing
the European Union and the Department for International Trade have been created. The new departments have yet to
publish spending data so they are not included in this report.
