1. 5 Habits to Break After Being on a Break
By: Hannah Peay
Winter break is a necessity for all. It gives the rest and relaxation college students need to
recovery from the previous semester and prepare for the coming one. While it is necessary,
winter break is difficult to come out of. Summer is different. Summer is a longer period of time
where we get bored and are ready to return to school. Winter break, however, is much more
difficult to come back from. These are five habits we have fallen into that must be broken before
returning to school.
1. Sleeping.
We all are guilty of sleeping late every now and then, but winter break takes it to a whole
other level. The sleeping pattern of a college student on winter break resembles that of a
bear in hibernation. Most of us have spent not just one but several different days not
moving from our bed/couch.
2. Eating.
All humans need to eat. I am not implying that we need to actually stop eating. It is the
quantity of food that needs to be dealt with. Winter break is like a nonstop buffet. Not
only are students home with mommy’s cooking, but the holidays are to blame as well. I,
personally, do not think I go more than two hours without consuming one thing or
another while on break. It must end.
3. Spending.
When students return home for break, they might as well have won the lottery. Mom and
dad are buying groceries, meals out, gas, clothes, you name it! This causes us “poor
2. college kids” to think we are rich. This causes us to spend an abundance of money on
frivolous items we would never dream of getting otherwise.
4. Binge Watching Netflix.
We’ve all seen the Netflix new arrivals. The entire series of Friends is on there now for
goodness sake. Winter break is an opportunity for us to catch up on shows we don’t
normally have time to watch. Don’t underestimate the power of Netflix. It has been
known to leave college students bedridden for days at a time.
5. Putting off important tasks.
In the beginning, winter break sounds like such a long period of time. We plan to use this
time to be productive in one way or another. I, for example, was supposed to be looking
and applying for jobs over the break. However, this break ends up being incredibly short.
We put off tasks such as job hunting and schoolwork until it is too late.
As we all know, winter break is more of a long nap. We lay around and do nothing for a
month and are surprised when the end comes and there’s nothing to show for it. I, however, am
not going to apologize for my lack of productiveness. Instead I am going to take responsibility
for my irresponsible yet incredibly relaxing behavior and just hit the ground running as soon as
classes start. I mean it isn’t called a “break” for nothing.
