Global Health Statement By: Hannah Al-Ghareeb
The emergence of the modern field of global health has brought immense
innovative dimensions to the studyof international wellbeing and an inclusive
realm to which solutions to universal issues may be synthesized. In the same
instance it has brought upon confusion on behalf of its broad lens. Global Health is
an interdisciplinary field of study in whichits goal is to investigate the problems
which stem from lifestyles of mankind, as well as the interactions with its
environment. It is commonlyassociated with public health which deals within local
frameworks of the dispersal of health and quality of life in a just manner.
Global Health is a sub-category of global studies as well as a field which studies the
logistics of health dispersal. It is interdisciplinary, and reads between the lines of
everycomponent studied today to ensure these measures are carried out thoroughly
and justifiably.
Global health encompasses this on a global scale by in-depth investigations into the
root causes of health disparities and effects throughout the world. The majority of
global problems are yielded from problematic structural ideologies which are
sociallyconstructed, and circulated via cultural ignorance and intolerance, fear, and
lack of education. Utilizingacademia in scientific and social research, and cultural
insight through the experience of ethnography while studying abroad, global health
experts are rendered with a unique understandingand set of skills to address these
issues.
Through the processes of globalizationand urbanization, populations are growing
at alarmingexponential rates, as well as pollution, conflicts and wars. Inversely,
availability of resources, the capacity to heal the sick and provide for the poor, and
the ability in sustaining a balance via multilateral collaborations are
decreasing. The main threat to the wellbeing of humans and their environment is
simply injustice.
In an environment where humans’ capacity to adapt, is being taunted, distracted,
and weakened by negative effects of stress, harmful food, and the ever growing
competition between their once altruistic co-habitants, have exhausted humans
mentally. People then turn voluntaryblind eyes to the issues which do not affect
them directly or immediately. What results are powerful elites fueling
environmental racism and impractical priorities to fulfill self interests of
nationalism as well as political and cultural domination. By prioritizing
competition and weaponizingtechnology, cultural diversity has also been
weaponized. This is exhibited through stereotypes defined by wrongful education
and used against cultures, perpetuated by the media of the masses, and legitimized
more than ever to rationalize the dehumanization of marginalized parties. As a
consequence, today’s international niche has been characterized by the
structuralized hoarding of resources and the exploitationof the impoverished and
indigenous.
Fortunately on the flipside insight into globalization unveils novel solutions only
offered by an evolution of merging cultures.
The necessarymethods, by which to exasperate this positive potential are filled by
the scope of global health. It carries specializations in epidemiology,
humanitarianism, political activism, and others whichratify the goal of standing in
solidarity with those defined voiceless.
