❖What is information?
➢ it is a collection of meaningful facts and figures that can be used as a base for guidance
and decision making.
➢it is worth nothing that any fact or figure is not necessarily information.
➢it has to be useful and meaningful for an individual or group.
➢When it is said that information serves as a base for guidance, it means information guides
the activities of individuals, business organizations or societies.

❖When does data become information?
✓ When you put a whole lot of data together that is related to one subject it yields
information.
In other words: (Sets of data) + (relational connection among data sets)
→information
Information source:- produces or selects the message or the sequence of messages to be
transmitted to the destination.
E.g.: The information source could be Violin and the message can be a new music.
The information source could be a distant space craft and the message could be an
image of a planet.

Elements of a Communication system
7
A communication system always consists of five major parts.
1. The information
source
Produces or selects the message or the sequence of messages
to be transmitted to the destination.
2. The transmitter
Coverts the message into a signal suitable for transmission
over the channel.
E.g.: Audio equipment that converts the Violin song into a
sequence of tiny pits on the mirror like surface of a CD.
E.g.: Spacecraft telecommunication system that converts a
photograph of Jupiter into a television signal.
1. The destination The person (or thing) for which the message is intended

1. The channel
The medium that is used to transmit the signal.
E.g.: Channel can be the millions of kilometres of empty
space
Between Jupiter and Earth.
E.g.: Channel can be the surface of CD.
Channel can be noisy. That is when the signal reaches the
receiver it may be slightly garbled.
2. The receiver
A device that reconstructs the message from the received
signal.
E.g.: It could be a large dish antenna.
E.g.: Electronics in the CD player.

What is information theory?
9
Information theory: it is a mathematical study of these five components, individually and
in combination.
Information theory can provide
✓ A way to measure the amount of information produced by a source
✓ A way to measure the ability of a noisy channel.
✓ Provides theoretical basis for data compression.
✓ Offers guidelines for the engineering design of transmitters and receivers.
Information Science: Academic field that deals with the generation, collection,
organization, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of recorded knowledge.

Data Processing (DP): The manipulation of data to transform it into some desired result.
In computer science.
it is the analysis and organization of data by the repeated use of one or more computer
programs.
Data Processing is divided into two kinds of processing:
a) Database processing
b) Transaction processing.
A Database is a collection of common records that can be searched, accessed and modified
such as bank account records.

➢ In Database processing a computerized database is used as the central source of
reference data for the computations.
➢ Transaction Processing
✓ refers to the interaction between computers in which one computer initiates a
transaction and another computer provides the first with the data or communication
required for that function.
✓ it is used to access and update the databases when users need to immediately view or
add information;
✓Examples of systems that involve all of these functions are automated teller machines,
airline reservation system.

❖Data processing cycle: represents the chain of processing events in most
data processing applications. It consists of data recording, transmission,
reporting, storage and retrieval.
✓ The original data is first recorded in a form readable by a computer.
✓ The data are then transmitted to a computer that performs the data
processing functions.
✓ Once the data reaches the computer, the computer processes it.
✓ After processing the data, the computer reports summary results to the
program’s operator.

Library (institution)
15
✓ Collection of books and other informational materials made available to people for
reading, study or reference. The word library comes from ‘liber’, the Latin word for
“book”.
The central mission of a library is
✓ To collect, organize, preserve, and provide access to knowledge and information.
✓ Modern libraries maintain collections that include not only materials such as
manuscripts, books, newspapers, and magazines, but also sound and video recordings.
✓ CD-ROMs, Computer Software and Online data.
