Term 2: How successfully did Elizabeth I deal with her
problems?
Your Task:
When Elizabeth came to the throne, many people doubted that a woman
could govern country by herself. Elizabeth had to show her people that she
could be as strong ruler.
One of the best ways to boost her image and win loyalty was to tour the
country and let people see her. She could demonstrate how rich and
powerful she was. These tours were successful, but she could only visit a
limited number of places. So, she could only visit a limited number of places.
So, she also used portraits to spread her image around.
Elizabeth kept a tight control over the paintings of her that were available.
At intervals throughout her reign, portraits of the Queen were issued which
were to be copied by artists. No other portraits of the Queen were allowed.
This plan seems to have worked because artists were still copying these
‘official’ paintings years later.
Your task is to analyse a portrait of Elizabeth I.
Why do powerful people take great care about the way they are shown in pictures?

Task 1
Portraits are not like photographs. They are interpretations of what a
person is like. They use symbolism to send messages to the viewer about the
person in the portrait. In this portrait are lots of symbols. Try to figure out
what the symbols are. The questions will help you do this- put your answers
underneath the questions.
It looks like Elizabeth
has wings. What
heavenly creature has
wings?
What is the weather
like in front of
Elizabeth?
What is the
weather like
behind
Elizabeth?
What type of jewellery is
Elizabeth wearing here?
What is Elizabeth
holding in her hand?
What is Elizabeth
standing on?

Now you have identified the symbols used in the Ditchley portrait you
need to figure out their meanings. Do this by using a ruler to draw a line
between the symbol and its meaning.
Using all of the information that you have looked at. What does this portrait tell us
about Elizabeth I?
