When it comes to HDFC Bank, thereÂ
are hardly any surprises during theÂ
earnings season as analysts and inÂ
vestors have realised over the pastÂ
few years.Â
For the 35th consecutive quarter,Â
HDFC Bank, India's thirdÂlargest priÂ
vate lender, posted a 30% yearÂonÂ
year growth in its net profit, driven byÂ
a higher fee income, stable marginsÂ
and robust asset quality.Â
The bank's loan book expanded 24%Â
yearÂonÂyear, supported by retail andÂ
corporate loans. However, the majorÂ
contributor was retail loans, growingÂ
at 28 %. Auto loans and credit toÂ
mediu m  a n d  s m a l l  e n t e r p r i s e s Â
(MSME), which constitute 40 % ofÂ
the total portfolio, were the majorÂ
drivers of the retail loan book.Â

cards and personal loans business alÂ
so grew substantially. Its current andÂ
savings account or CASA ratio conÂ
tinued to be stable at 45.4%, helpingÂ
the bank to maintain a stable cost ofÂ
funds and margins. Net interest marÂ
gin, which is the difference beÂ

cost of deposits, was lower marginallyÂ
from the last quarter. Still at 4.1%, itÂ
was within the 3.9Â4.2% range asÂ
guided by the bank and continues toÂ
be one of the highest in the industry.Â
Net interest income, or the differenceÂ

expectations as loan growth wasÂ
slightly lower than usual. However,Â
higher fee income and staÂÂ
ble provisioning helped the bank toÂ
compensate this slowdown andÂ
report a consistent bottom lineÂ
growth. However, for the quarter toÂ
December, the bank showed someÂ
stress on asset quality Bad loansÂ
increased 14% sequenÂÂ
tially on an absolute basis. More thanÂ
80% of this Rs.298 crore rise in badÂ
loans can be attributed to retailÂ
assets, with 50% of it coming from theÂ
commercial vehicles and constructionÂ
equipment segment. However, the badÂ
loansÂtoÂtotal loans (gross) ratio wasÂ
just 1% and with a provisioningÂ
coverage ratio of 80% this is not aÂ
very serious concern. Almost allÂ
b a n k s  a r e  t a r g e t i n g  t h e  retailÂ
s e g m e n t  t o  s u p p o r t  l o a n  growth.Â
Hence, HDFC Bank will also have toÂ
reckon with increased competitionÂ
u n l e s s  i n v e s t m e n t  a c t i v i t y  picksÂ
up. Asset quality might also be underÂ
pressure, especially, in the retailÂ
segment. At Rs.662.70, HDFC Bank isÂ
trading at a price to book value of 4.5Â
FY13. At this valuation, all the posiÂ
tives have already been factored inÂ
and there appears to be limitedÂ
upside.Â
