Presented at Open Data Manchester's "Joy Diversion" event which followed the OpenStreetMap UK CIC AGM.
This talk was an introduction, and some pointers to how people can edit and update the map. It was followed by groups exploring Manchester, before returning for hands on help with using iD editor.
2. @osmuk @gregorymarler Introduction to OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap is a free, editable
map of the whole world that is
being built by volunteers largely
from scratch and released with
an open-content license.
9. @osmuk @gregorymarler Introduction to OpenStreetMap
How to map?
With paper
With a camera
With a smart phone
With memory or local knowledge
●
Verifiable on the ground
10. @osmuk @gregorymarler Introduction to OpenStreetMap
How to map?
Mapping cakes!
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap (HOT)
MapSwipe
Street Complete
Mapillary or OpenStreetCam
Thank you for Open Data Manchester for hosting us.
I originally proposed a “train the trainers” workshop, so let’s start with what I always do…
Hands up if…
You know of OpenStreetMap?
You have edited OpenStreetMap?
You are an OSM UK member?
What is OSM? (read out)
So let’s long in detail at what that means
“Free as-in beer” means you get to use it, subject ot limitations of the offer. Like other maps.
“Free as in speech” not about how full the glass is, you get more. You get the beer recipie and the right to brew your own.
In map terms, you get the data that made the map & we’ll see what you can do with that data.
Another common description. Meaning it can be updated/improved by anyone.
This means it is as up-to-date and as complete/detailed as I, you, anyone, makes it.
Very good for Humanitarian use (a talk in itself).
So let’s long at the map…
This is as it was when it started.
Switch to web browser. osm.org/
In workshops, I encourage people to look this themselves.
Find your home, work place, etc.
See what we have made.
Use the map layers button on the right.
Explain the freedom to create other styles
Why, what for
So many styles, even a website to show many of them in a random fashon.
Live demo of Overpass Turbo
https://overpass-turbo.eu/
Query of emergency=defibillator
Or amenity=library
Or building=university
Might not show on the main map styles but we can query the data to find it.
Bottom right shows total count.
Campainging opprtunities, or other ideas, such as thinking about where I’d rather have a heart attack.
So how do we, and what.
Verifiable on the ground – not subjective
Surveying methods vary for amount of data or preferred style.
If in doubt whether it can be mapped, record it.
Discuss with experienced mappers how to add it when you get back to the computer.
Planning methods (explain cakes & HOT)
Apps, that may aid mappers
MapSwipe + camera apps
or edit directly.
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/StreetComplete
Then back at the computer.
Sometimes I do a live tutorial.
Other times I say use the osm.org walkthrough
Edit button asks you if you want to do the walkthrough when you first use it
(or press help in button right of editor).
Help links from top right of osm.org
Good after the event.
Not just about the data, also the metadata.
How many welsh names have we mapped (visualisation is a work in progress)?
What have I mapped?
http://hdyc.neis-one.org/?LivingWithDragons
Once people are mapping at a workshop, somethimes I map on the project so people can see
Other times I leave this on, to show how many people are currrently improving the map
https://osmlab.github.io/show-me-the-way/
I mentioned a lot of URLS, note these ones
osm.org is a short link
osmuk.org to see learn what we do
/help is the button at the top
Thank you.
