the%city%because%of%its%importance%to%Fort%Worth’s%economy.%%Famous%western%men%
such%as%the%Earp%Brothers%and%Butch%Cassidy%and%the%Sundance%Kid%spent%*me%

Sundance(SquareC(Today,%Sundance%%Square%is%the%entertainment%district%of%
downtown%Fort%Worth.%%Although%you%can%s*ll%find%historic%building%facades%along%
some%streets,%much%of%the%area%was%either%restored%or%rebuilt%in%the%1980’s.%%No%
longer%are%there%cowboy%gunfights%in%the%streets.%%In%fact,%private%security%police%
the%area%heavily.%%It%is%a%challenge%to%find%a%criminal%in%a%district%named%aOer%one.%%It%
gives%you%the%somewhat%general%feeling%of%the%“Wild%West”%without%the%harms%that%

The%Tarrant%County%Conven*on%center%now%covers%up%a%large%por*on%of%Hell’s%Half%Acre,%including%the%former%site%of%the%Majes*c%Theater%(Blue%star).%%

The%goal%of%this%project%was%to%research%Fort%Worth’s%Sundance%Square%and%
compare%it%to%the%now%ex*nct%Hell’s%Half%Acre.%%The%two%are%only%separated%by%a%
few%blocks%and%have%some%similari*es%but%even%more%differences.%%The%Acre%was%
founded%when%the%railroad%and%cable%drives%came%through%town.%%When%this%
district’s%crime%became%an%eyesore%and%was%no%longer%economically%necessary%for%
the%city,%it%was%torn%down%and%replaced%by%the%much%needed%Tarrant%County%
Conven*on%Center%and%other%downtown%revitaliza*on.%%%The%district’s%history%was%
gone%and%“moved”%a%few%blocks%north%to%what%is%now%Sundance%Square.%%The%city%
recreated%history%for%tourists%and%locals.%%Sundance%Square%was%meant%to%be%a%copy%
of%Hell’s%Half%Acre%although%it%became%a%simulacrum%of%it.%%%

With%the%use%of%this%historical%aerial%photo%three%important%features%of%Hell’s%Half%Acre%and%the%
surrounding%area%can%be%found.%%Although%the%buildings%in%the%Acre%are%gone%now,%the%T&P%Railroad%
buildings%are%s*ll%standing%today.%%%
I%spoke%with%a%university%professor%to%gain%my%ini*al%knowledge%for%this%study.%%%
Informa*on%came%from%a%variety%of%online,%text,%and%photography%sources.%%This%
included%por*ons%from%Selcer’s%“Hell’s%Half%Acre”%(1991),%as%well%as%United%
States%Geological%Survey%historic%aerials.%%AOer%studying%informa*on%about%the%
two%districts,%I%began%to%find%major%items%that%Sundance%Square%copied%from%
Hell’s%Half%Acre.%%The%use%of%present%and%historic%maps,%photos,%and%aerials%
played%a%large%role%in%the%study.%Site%visits%were%necessary%to%confirm%readings%
and%maps%as%well%as%provide%present%day%photos.%%%

Sundance%Square%now%site%just%blocks%from%where%Hell’s%Half%Acre%once%stood%for%decades.%
Just%as%saloons%and%gambling%halls%were%high%in%demand%for%workers%in%Hell’s%Half%Acre,%today%Sundance%Square%provides%
restaurants,%giO%shops,%and%even%museums%as%seen%here%of%the%300%block%of%Main%St.%%
Sundance%Square%is%one%of%the%most%popular%venues%of%Fort%Worth%on%weekend%nights.%

  Centreport

  Aerotropolis

  internaKonal	
  airport

  significant	
  commercial	
  component	
  of	
  the	
  City	
  of	
  Arlington	
  
Entertainment	
  District	
  as	
  arKculated	
  in	
  several	
  City	
  of	
  Arlington	
  
documents.	
  The	
  City	
  of	
  Arlington	
  Entertainment	
  District	
  is	
  home	
  to	
  
the	
  largest	
  cluster	
  of	
  entertainment	
  related	
  resources	
  in	
  the	
  State	
  
of	
  Texas,	
  including	
  Cowboys	
  and	
  Rangers	
  Stadium	
  and	
  the	
  Six	
  Flags	
  
Amusement	
  Complex.	
  Together,	
  these	
  ameniKes	
  consKtute	
  an	
  
entertainment	
  desKnaKon	
  with	
  the	
  potenKal	
  to	
  serve	
  the	
  region	
  
and	
  act	
  as	
  a	
  naKonal	
  magnet.	
  	
  
	
  
In	
  its	
  current	
  form,	
  the	
  Entertainment	
  District	
  has	
  yet	
  to	
  capitalize	
  
on	
  its	
  potenKal	
  as	
  a	
  regional	
  and	
  naKonal

  reach

potenKal,	
  Arlington	
  must	
  work	
  to	
  establish	
  a	
  strong	
  and	
  defined	
  
cluster	
  of	
  ancillary	
  services	
  which	
  together	
  form	
  an	
  urban	
  gathering	
  
place	
  which	
  contributes	
  to	
  the	
  overall	
  amenity	
  package	
  of	
  the	
  
Entertainment

  plan	
  seeks

  near

  intersecKon

  Collins

The	
  purpose	
  of	
  this	
  professional	
  report	
  is	
  to	
  idenKfy	
  design	
  elements	
  that	
  can	
  be	
  
used	
  to	
  help	
  increase	
  pedestrian	
  thermal	
  comfort	
  in	
  Texas.	
  Although	
  the	
  contemporary	
  
planning	
  paradigm	
  emphasizes	
  walkability	
  of	
  the	
  urban	
  environment,	
  and	
  many	
  ciKes	
  
have	
  addressed	
  the	
  need	
  for	
  more	
  pedestrian-­‐friendly	
  communiKes,	
  the	
  impact	
  of	
  
climate	
  on	
  walkability	
  is	
  ofenKmes	
  ignored.	
  This	
  is	
  very	
  important	
  in	
  Texas,	
  as	
  very	
  ligle	
  
to	
  no	
  literature	
  regarding	
  the	
  relaKonship	
  between	
  climate	
  and	
  walkability	
  exists.	
  
Consequently,	
  this	
  study	
  aims	
  to	
  determine	
  which	
  elements	
  impact	
  pedestrian	
  thermal	
  
comfort	
  and	
  the	
  ways	
  in	
  which	
  these	
  elements	
  may	
  be	
  incorporated	
  into	
  Texas	
  
communiKes.	
  This	
  is	
  necessary	
  due	
  to	
  the	
  demand	
  of	
  walkable	
  neighborhoods	
  and	
  the	
  
rapid	
  growth	
  being	
  experienced	
  in	
  Texas’	
  hot	
  climate.
