This review analyzed 30 randomized controlled trials that evaluated individual behavioral counseling for smoking cessation. The review found that individual counseling was more effective at helping smokers quit compared to minimal interventions like brief advice or self-help materials. Specifically, individual counseling doubled a smoker's chance of quitting long-term compared to control groups. The review also found some evidence that individual counseling may help smokers quit even when combined with nicotine replacement therapy, though the effect was smaller. There was insufficient evidence to determine whether more intensive counseling was more effective than less intensive counseling.
