2. AFFLATUS
THE GALLERY AND CAFE BUILDINGS FORM A GATEWAY LINKING VICTORIA PARK AND
THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY THROUGH THE DESIGN OF A GRAND PUBLIC SPACE
THAT COMPLIMENTS THE UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS BEHIND.
THE SPACE IS NOT SIMPLY A THRESHOLD BETWEEN THE PARK AND UNIVERSITY.
THE CAFE AND COMFORTABLE SEATING AREAS PROVIDE FOR AN ENVIRONMENT
WHERE PEOPLE CAN MEET AND SOCIALISE.
THE GALLERY ESTABLISHES A SPACE FOR ADMIRATION, AS WELL AS A SOURCE OF
INSPIRATION THAT IS SPURRED BY THE PIECES DISPLAYED WITHIN. THE RIGID
CONFINES OF THE EVERYDAY, STRUGGLE TO PROVIDE A SPARK FOR CREATIVITY
OR INNOVATION. HOWEVER, A RAY OF LIGHT EVENTUALLY MAKES ITS WAY
THROUGH THE CRACKS. IT TRIGGERS NEW PATHS OF KNOWLEDGE AND CREATION
THAT WOULD OTHERWISE NOT HAVE BEEN REALISED. THIS REALISATION IS
DISPLAYED THROUGH A PLAY OF LIGHT ON THE EQUINOX.

THE HORIZONTAL BLADES ON THE
ROOF CONTROL NATURAL LIGHT
WITHIN THE BUILDINGS AND CON-
NECT THEM TOGETHER.
A GRID DRIVES THE ARCHITEC-
TURE.
A PATH BETWEEN THE TWO BUILD-
INGS WOULD PROVIDE AN ENTRANCE
TO THE UNIVERSITY.
VERTICAL BLADES SLOWLY REVEAL
THE UNIVERSITY. THE JOURNEY
THROUGH THE SPACE IS PURPOSE-
FUL. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL
FORMS MIMIC THE STRAIGHT AND
RIGID ARCHITECTURE BEHIND.
A START

The subject site is at the
boundary between Victoria Park
and the University of Sydney.
Victoria Park is located in
Broadway, Sydney. It is bound
by the University of Sydney,
Parramatta Rd, and City Rd.
The park is open to the public
and consists of Lake Northam,
Victoria Park pool, and a
number of historic structures
such as the entrance gates,
Gardener’s Lodge (which is now
home to a café), an ornamental
wooden bridge and Canadian
totem pole with the university
visible above the horizon.
The park is well serviced by
Parramatta Road and City Road
bus services. Car parking is
available, with accessible
parking bays located near the
Victoria Park Pool entrance.
The park is used for relaxa-
tion, exercise, play, lunch
breaks, and a number of public
events that occur throughout
the year.
SITE
5. 4
The site rests just next to
the New Law Building. The
stairs beneath the building
lead towards the park,
suggesting that an entrance to
the university would be fit-
ting at that boundary.
The site would be occupied by
an art gallery, a cafe, and
some landscaping to further
encourage the new entrance to
be used as a threshold where
people can meet, socialise,
and enjoy the natural sur-
rounds of the park.

on the equinox, at 5.55am, the
sun travels through the lobby.
it passes through perfectly
aligned walls that draw the
sun to a pool that sits by the
gallery. the pool then quickly
reflects the light through the
gallery windows and over the
neighbouring walls.
