opportunity to travel with the choir
choir pay, which acknowledges the hard work and commitment of the boys
New boys initially join the choir as probationer choristers, rehearsing on
Wednesday afternoons and then will be gradually integrated into the main choir.
Many of the boys continue to sing in the men’s section of the choir once their
voices break and most choose to study music for GCSE and A-level.
Ex-choristers have gone on to take up prestigious scholarships to study music at
university.
In addition to singing at the cathedral, the choir also sings further afield and
regularly goes on a summer tour. Recently the choir has sung in Westminster
Abbey and Windsor Castle.
The cathedral is looking for boys between the ages of 7 and 12. We do not
expect them to be accomplished singers when they join: all we ask for is
enthusiasm!

Dangers of online "Sextortion" scams
Gwent Police is warning residents about the dangers of becoming victims of online blackmail
by criminals threatening to publish explicit images or footage online.
Nationally, police have received numerous reports from both men and women who are told by
blackmailers to pay large sums of money into offshore bank accounts or face seeing compro-
mising footage of them uploaded to the internet and sent to their family and friends. So far,
one case has been reported in Gwent where a man from Ebbw Vale was targeted. In that case
no money was paid and no images were circulated. Officers suspect there may be more victims
who may be too frightened or embarrassed to report the crime.
Whilst the scam can take several forms the criminals usually target victims by adding them as a
friend on social media sites such as Facebook, or through conversations on Skype or Face
Time. They then build up a relationship with a victim before luring them into online video sex
chats. Screen grabs of the compromising images and footage are then sent to the victims along
with demands for cash. The recent spike in the UK has prompted Forces to issue warnings for
people to be vigilant.

Gwent Police Detective Sergeant Allan Davies said: "In most of the cases images have not ac-
tually been distributed, but it has nevertheless been a traumatic ordeal for the victims. They
are understandably very worried about the consequences of compromising images and videos
being posted online.
"The criminals, who are very often based abroad, are clever and malicious, with a complete
disregard for the people they're attempting to exploit. The moment someone takes part in a
video conversation of this kind they become vulnerable to exploitation and blackmail. The
only real way to prevent this from happening is by not taking part in this kind of activity. For
those who might be too embarrassed or nervous to report the crime please be reassured that
officers will deal with complaints in a sympathetic and supportive way."
Police have issued these tips to avoid falling victim to this scam:
• Do not befriend anyone you don't know - you have no idea who they are.
• Update the privacy settings on your social networking accounts so only people you know can
view your account.
If you become a victim of this type of scam, do not respond to the blackmailer's de-
mands, but report the issue to the police and the relevant social networking site. For
more safety advice, visit www.getsafeonline.org/social-networking/webcam-blackmail
We are urging residents to be vigilant as we have become aware of mem-
bers of the public being contacted by email, purportedly sent by police, and stating
that their computers, laptops and tablet devices will be locked as they had viewed
certain sites. They are then asked to pay funds via Ukash to avoid this.
Police are urging members of the public never to pay any cash on request, never to
divulge any personal details, and report any suspicious incident or contact Action
Fraud on: 0300 123 2040 or on :www.actionfraud.police.uk
