5 Benefits of Using Reciprocity in Investigation InterviewsCase IQ
The purpose of an investigation interview is to obtain the greatest quality and quantity of truthful information, and investigators have an arsenal of tools they can use to get them to that goal. But many of the traditional questioning styles used to elicit information are manipulative, or even coercive, and results show that these approaches aren’t effective and produce less information or, even worse, false information.
Investigators can get better results using relationship-building skills, such as rapport and reciprocity. But reciprocity must be employed with sincerity to build credibility with the investigation interview subject and using it effectively requires training and practice.
Join Mark Anderson, director of training with Anderson Investigative Associates, as he discusses the effective use of reciprocity in investigation interviews.

Introduction
I am doing my field ED at Walton County Division of Family and Children Services in Georgia where I get to interact with different persons of different interests. I was allocated a number of roles some of which include; interviewing clients for renewal and recertification of benefits Medicaid/ Food stamps, assisting in the preparation for new placement and reviewing services and history of children from the foster care department and finalizing and processing applications.
In my field ED, I have met a number of individuals who I got to serve and interact with. One of my best experience was an encounter with a client two weeks ago who I found to have an intriguing personality. Below is my conversation with a client. I will use acronyms in place of names.
C indicating the client
M indicating myself
M: Good evening? How can I be of assistance?
C: Evening. I have been sent here by your supervisor. I have made a number of complaints in relation to mistreatment of a child in foster care along my street of residence and I have received no feedback yet.
M: How long ago did you make this complaint?
C: This was about a month ago, and for the previous one week I have been camping here to at least get a solution.
M: We are sorry for the delay. There has been a number of such cases recently and the process of moving them from one foster home to another has consumed most of the staff’s time. You cannot tell the reporter what the agency is going to do with the family. We have to say that we are working with the family. Please fix this.
C: It is understandable. How soon can you, therefore, take a look at this case? The little boy is in a really bad state from all the physical torture and needs urgent medical attention.
M: The case is now our priority. We will start the required procedure to see through that the boy is in safe hands and receives medical attention as well.
C: Thank you. I appreciate the role you, as an institute, play in Georgia.
M: Thank you too. It is with such information that we are able to serve the people of Georgia better, improving the society one step at a time.
Interpretation of the dialogue
The dialogue was a complaint brought forth by a client about a neglected child in foster care. The client was specifically concerned with the health of the child. A social practice theory in close relation to this situation is systems theory. According to Garthwait (2017), systems theory “describes human behavior in terms of complex systems”. In relation to this theory, members of the society are directly involved in resolving a problem. My client, from the dialogue above, was concerned about a member of the community and sought to find help.
My reaction
The situation gained my attention, especially because the boy in foster care was little. Under no circumstance should any individual experience such torture (Laureate E.

Legal Considerations
I think when working in the field, it is important to understand that legalities will affect various areas of social work practice. For example, the legal system may come into play with social workers who are working in areas of “child welfare, domestic violence, crime victim counseling, adult protection, housing, immigrant services, youth services, and public policies” (Birkenmaier & Berg-Weger, 2018). Social workers should also be aware of the workings of the legal system, in order to “communicate and work successfully with judges and attorneys, recognize the rights afforded to clients by law, recognize certain problems of their clients as essentially legal problems or social policy problems, and minimize their legal risk in practice” (Birkenmaier & Berg-Weger, 2018). With my placement, I work with clients who have been involved with the courts whether it be clients who are in recovery, or with parent groups who have been involved in courts due to their children’s issues with truancy, etc. With that being said, I have to be aware of any legalities that may affect any of the clients during times. Some legal considerations I have to consider may come in terms of confidentiality or having consent for services before working with clients. Also, we have a very client-centered approach here at the agency; what the client says or wants is what we work with. I have to remember that and take that into consideration as well.
Potential Challenges
When working with clients, there’s always potential challenges involved when in practice. For one, it is important to consider that confidentiality may have to be broken in some cases. For example, when a client is considered a risk to themselves or someone around them, confidentiality is no longer possible. Also, a challenge can arise when a client is severely in need of services but refuses to sign the consent forms. That puts us in a dilemma because we know the client needs help, but legally we cannot provide them with services unless we have their consent.

Re: Letter of Recommendation for Gary A Sternberg
To whom it may concern,
I have met with Gary Sternberg on numerous occasions while he was the content developer and
education program director at ProSchools Incorporated. We had several discussions on the phone
and I met Gary in person several times for business meetings. I have worked with Gary for about
five years.
Having spoken with Gary several times on the phone and meeting him in person, I recognize his
valuable insight about insurance education issues, regulations and insurance industry trends.
While auditing education records at the ProSchools offices in Portland, Oregon, I did a lengthy
review of records with the assistance of Gary. I became aware Gary is professional and dedicated
to maintaining high standards for his company’s compliance with Washington regulations.
Gary kept in communication with many state regulators, education providers, and industry
professionals and communicated with me about best practices in other states that could benefit
Washington’s education programs. I asked Gary to participate on committees for the insurance
commissioner’s office and he provided clarity and meaningful input to the discussions. His
suggestions were well received.
I consider Gary to be a good resource and a valuable consultant. I believe he will be a great asset
to your company.
