What Does Black Friday Mean for UK Retailers?
John Lewis, Argos and Dixons
The first article which I have looked is from Mobile Marketing Magazine and is titled ‘What Does Black Friday Mean for UK Retailers?
John Lewis, Argos and Dixons. As the name suggests this article is all about Black Friday, which is a tradition which has started in
America which sets the first day of Christmas shopping. This is also a day where lots of retailers offer discounted products on the one
day to increase footfall, in an attempt to make more profits.
John Lewis, Dixons and Argos are the retailers focused on in this article. John Lewis was first involved in the tradition in 2013, which
was the first year Black Friday had really made an impact in the UK market. This was their busiest online shopping day of 2013 and set
a number of records, which doubled the previous records from the year earlier. As of this John Lewis are going to build from this and
are taking this more seriously this year (2014) with around 100 deals available and its distribution center bringing on extra staff to
cover the increased demand.
Dixons who are an electronic have anticipated that they will have more visitors to their online site on Black Friday, which is likely to
overtake Christmas Day 2014, which over 1 million people viewed last year. They expect that smartphones and tablets will be the
most purchased item on the day. “We think Black Friday is going to be a real whopper, becoming our second largest sales weekend of
the year, after Boxing Day,” says Sebastian James, CEO of Dixons.
Finally Argos are also going to move into the Black Friday tradition in Argos they have changed their marketing and promotions for
this year and in the spirit of their newest brand campaign, which is that they are encouraging customers to ‘Get Set for Black Friday’.
They also have a special countdown clock on the website website in the run up to Black Friday to help build excitement and
anticipation with customers for the great offers and bargains they can expect from Argos across tech, toys, TV ranges and more.

BlackBerry Offers iPhone Users $550 to ‘Trade Up
• The next article looked at was ‘BlackBerry Offers iPhone Users $550 to
‘Trade Up’ in this article we see that BlackBerry are offering customers
money if they trade their iPhone in and get one if their own BlackBerry
Passport phones. This goes on to explain that BlackBerry have made more
partnerships with ‘Blyk’ and ‘Habari Media’ in an attempt which they can
then expand their own instant messenger service (BBM). This is a currently
failing service wich is increasing getting rival brands who are simply more
successful, such as WhatsApp which is now owned my Facebook. I think
that what’s good about this is that BlackBerry are offering a good deal to
iPhone customers who may have been looking to invest in a new
smartphone. However, I think this campaign mainly makes BlackBerry
desperate, as this shows them as almost ‘begging’ iPhone users to change
Smartphones to a struggling manufacturer.

‘’The interactive Advertising Bureau’’
The 1st story that I will be reviewing is ‘’The Interactive Advertising
Bureau and the FBI Join Forces to Combat Malware’’ This article sets
out to inform readers that the FBI and the interactive advertising
bureau are joining forces prevent malware. The strengths of this article
is that it informs reader firstly what malware is and goes into depth
why both parties are joining forces. Weaknesses of this article is that I
feel it concentrates more on what malware is and what it does more
than why both parties are joining forces. In conclusion I believe that the
article is a little week simply because Mike Randazzo has spent most of
the time talking what malware is rather than concentrate on the two
parties joining.

‘’Digital Marketing Experts Share Top Tips for
Marketing Any Small Business’’
• The 2nd article which I will review sets out to inform small business’s about
the opportunities that have arisen for them to market their business. The
positives from this article are that ‘ChristaH’ goes into great detail about
the increase in opportunities to market business’s and also goes into detail
about how businesses can reach out through social media sites such as
Facebook also the writer of the article gives out some advice on how
business men and women can monitor their marketing activity.
Weaknesses that I could point out in this article are that the writer may
have brushed over a few topics such as what is Fusion 360 yes there is a
link to the webpage but they could have gone into a brief detail on who
that agency actually is. In conclusion I believe that the article is very
informative and detailed in places and gives a lot of knowledge to the
reader making sure that readers realise the opportunities that are available
to them.

#YOUDRIVE Campaign
• This article is a review of a Mercedes campaign and informs the
reader what the campaign is about, execution of the campaign and
the results of the campaign. The positives from this post is that it's a
precise and well written informative article in terms of the research
that the author has conducted. The weakness from this article is that
even though it shows that the campaign itself did well but the article
doesn't show figures in terms of how many A-Class cars were sold so
begging the question was the campaign an success in terms of sales.
In conclusion I believe the article has do its research very well
however has missed a very important detail on how much actual sales
were made during the 2 month campaign.

Back to Vinyl — The Office Turntable
This Article all about a record company called ‘Kontor Records’ as they have
come up which a very revolutionary idea which can help to change how they
can promote themselves. Kontor Records have been sending out Vinyl disks,
along with the world’s first ‘office turntable’ to play them on. The turntable
was made out of an envelope that had a QR code printed on it. The creative
directors simply had to flip the envelope over, activate the QR code with a
smartphone, put the vinyl disc on the turntable, and then place the phone
over the disc to play it. Each disc could play multiple songs and linked back to
the Kontor site.I think that this was a very god idea as this helps to play
music in a different way which no other Record company have done before,
this helps them to become known as different which will help them to be
seen in the growing and increasingly more challenging music industry.
8. NFC – Near Field Communcation
• NFC is a form of contactless communication which is compared to
devices such as smartphones and/or tablets. NFC works by using
simple technology through a short range, low power wireless link
evolved from radio frequency (TechRadar.). NFC has recently become
available in the UK through mobile providers such as Orange and has
been available in the US since 2011 with Google Wallet being the
main benefit from NFC. In conclusion all NFC is doing is identifying us
and our bank account to a computer and letting us pay for things with
just a tap of button.
9. Proximity Marketing
• Proximity Marketing is the localized wireless distribution of
advertising content connected with particular place. The
transmissions from proximity marketing can be received by
individuals in that particular location by people who wish to receive
them. The retail sector is where proximity marketing is mostly being
tested so that when a consumer walks through the door of the store,
they can be alerted of deals and offers for that moment in time.
Proximity Marketing is being utilised by companies such as Apple’s
Ibeacon transmits information from a Bluetooth low energy device to
smartphones that come into the range of it.
10. App Development
• In the past two years, the app market has exploded. In under 9 months the
Apple store reported over a billion downloads, and then doubled that
number in half the time. This is vital for many businesses as if they have a
App for their business this can introduce a new way of accessing the
company, this is because this can then be easily accessed through a user’s
mobile phone. This then makes a company much more approachable as
there is a quick and easy method of accessing the company.
• There are many different companies who can develop a business an app,
one which I found is ‘Nodes’ who have previously developed Apps for the
likes of Samsung, Adidas, BMW, Lego, Pepsi many more. These have ranged
from a manner of different types of Apps, such as Carlsberg’s ‘Find a Pub’
to Samsung’s ‘Real time audio’ which detects what Football match is on.

12. Review of O2 Priority
• An app specially for O2 customers that grants them access to some
pretty goof offers. Everything form Yo Sushi! to Halfords has gotten
involved in the deals setup, with significant savings to be made on
things like food and shopping. The Odeon is even offering half price
adult and teenager tickets between Sunday and Thursday. One minor
niggle is that it isn't searchable, things are just location based, so you
can't use it to find out if your favorite shop has any savings to be
made. The way deals are redeemed also varies, some are codes,
others just tips on where money can be saved.
13. App Review – YouTube
• Just like the Web site, with the YouTube app you'll be able to upload and watch
videos, keep up with your favorite channels, browse your subscriptions and
playlists, and much more. This App opens with a selected amount of videos from
your personal accounts subscriptions and also a mixture of videos which YouTube
are suggesting you would like to view based on previous videos you have
watched.
• If you touch the menu button in the upper left, you get a slide-out interface with
a huge list of options divided up into three categories: managing your account
and videos, managing your subscriptions, and YouTube video categories. In this
latest version the layout for each of the sections is much cleaner, making it easier
to get exactly where you want to go.
• The YouTube video discovery section consists of a huge list of categories that are
excellent for new video discovery. You can check out film and animation videos,
music, sports, gaming, comedy, and really anything you can find if you were
browsing the YouTube Web site
