Europe-China Eco-Cities Link Project (EC-Link), DCI-ASIE 2013/329-453. Budget: 9.304.400 EUR. Implemented by GIZ InS-led consortium.
Objective: Assisting Chinese cities in meeting the targets set in the 12th/13th 5-year plan. Sharing experiences on sustainable urbanisation and knowledge management
on green urban development, including urban energy issues and other relevant policies between Europe and China. Component 1: Setting up a low-carbon eco-cities
development support mechanism in the form of a bilingual knowledge platform. Component 2: Creating an urban sustainability lab which involves assembling tool boxes
for local administrations that can be tested and applied in various cities; Component 3: Setting up an urban sustainability help-desk to strengthen the capacity of
municipalities in applying eco-low carbon principles to urban planning design & management, also on the basis of the tool boxes developed in Component 2.
Tasks across all 3 components include:  Development of toolboxes on Chinese eco-cities in the following sectors: compact urban development, energy-efficient
green building, green transport, clean energy, water management, solid waste management, green industries, urban renewal and revitalisation, and green municipal
finance.  Capacity building and training for pilot cities. Setting up Inter-city Laboratories aiming at knowledge sharing on key concepts of eco-city development,
enhancing capacity development, and delivering hands-on workshops on technical issues in the above mentioned thematic sectors. Published 9 eco-cities
toolboxes on the bilingual knowledge platform www.eclink.org, covering clean energy, green buildings, green transport, and others. These areas are part ofthe priority
investment areas of the pilot cities, and are relevant to implementing the Covenant of Mayors in China.

Unit (PSU), Singapore on “Shaping the Future through an Asia Pacific Partnership for Urbanization and Sustainable City Development”.

the future of urbanisation and sustainable city development taking into account challenges, policies, issues, and changes facing the development and management
of cities. Research on three LAC cities (Mexico, Lima, Santiago) and one urban corridor in Southeast Asia, outlining important lessons from the ways cities are
addressing urbanisation and sustainable development issues. Research on the role of innovation in identifying solutions to address the problems ofcities. Outlining
a framework for an Asia-Pacific partnership to shape the future of urbanisation and sustainable city development in the region.
(ii) For UN-Habitat. (Part-time June-October 2014): As Lead Consultant conducting an evaluation of BASF Stiftung-UN-Habitat programme contribution towards
sustainable development. The evaluation covered BASF Stiftung supported projects implemented by UN-Habitat in the period 2005-2013. It reviewed four types of
projects: (i) support to emergency and recovery response; (ii) youth empowerment; (iii) the construction of water and sanitation systems; and (iv) introduction of
environmental education and capacity-building processes in selected schools and communities. The assignment covered Brazil, Haiti, Mexico, Kenya.
(iii) For Ford Foundation. (Part-time: September-October 2014): Study on ¨Rural-Urban Linkages from an Urban Perspective¨. Research into and analysis of issues of
rural-urban linkages from the perspective of secondary cities (population of a few hundred thousand to over five million) in developing and emerging economy countries.
Highlighting trends, influences and challenges affecting the relationship of small and intermediary cities with their rural hinterlands. In cooperation withCentro
Latinoamericano para el Desarrollo Rural (RIMISP), Santiago de Chile.

Peru Urban Management Education Programme (PEGUP). Budget: 3.5 MEUR, financed by the Dutch government
Project objective: to support local governments in developing urban management capacities that allow the solution of their urban and environmental problems. The project
focused on capacity building, working through different mechanisms of education and training, technical assistance to municipal development with key emphasis on Local
Agenda 21 promotion and ecologically and environmentally sustainable urban development as well as promotion of networking and experience exchange. The
services offered are part of the development strategy of "Forum of Cities of Life" network which represents cities, universities and environmental NGOs.
Tasks included: As TL: management, coordination and monitoring of project implementation activities and finances, and of a team of international and local experts; 
Elaboration and management of a training programme for professionals and municipal staff. Development of training materials. Advisory services for municipalities on
key issues of environmentally sound urban development.

The evaluation covered BASF Stiftung supported projects implemented by UN-Habitat in the period 2005-2013. It reviewed four types of projects: (i) support to emergency and recovery response; (ii) youth empowerment; (iii) the construction of water and sanitation systems; and (iv) introduction of environmental education and capacity-building processes in selected schools and communities.
