Intumescent paint should be applied with a commercial grade airless paint sprayer to achieve the smoothest finish and maximum material per coat. It can be applied over bare or primed surfaces only unless approved by building officials, and any existing paint must be clean without cracking, peeling or flaking. At least 24 hours of curing time is recommended between coats, and 48 to 72 hours is better to allow moisture to escape. Intumescent paint should not be diluted with water as it can change the fire retardant formula.

TO AVOID APPLYING
INTUMESCENT PAINT

APPLICATION WITH A ROLLER
Intumescent coating is tested over
bare or primed surfaces only. For
this reason, approval for use over a
painted substrate is at the
discretion of the building official.
Existing paints must be clean with

APPLICATION ON EXISTING
PAINT
It would be great if you can get at
least 24 hours to cure, preferably 48
to 72 hours would be better. That
just allows more moisture to get out
of it before you apply another layer
of latex or acrylic paints.
TOP COAT IMMEDIATELY AFTER
APPLICATION
It is not required to dilute intumescent
paint because it can change the
formula and fire retardant features.
