2. TECHNOLOGY I],¡ A TIMELESS LA]'ID
or the alumina
Peninsulq NabalcoPty
Limited has incorporated the
finest technologr in the world.
The sandy alumina produced
by the Gove refinery has
established a reputation for
consistentþ hþh quality and
iswell accepted in many
aluminium smelters around
the world. It has been used in
smelters in Western Europe,
Eg5lpt, NorthAmericq
Chinq Japan and Korea.

The nBayer
Process" used is a
continuous chemical prooess
which comprises the
following steps:
o Bauxite is ground to fine
powder andnixedwith
caustic soda to form a
slutty.
o The alumina is dissolved
out of the bauxite in a
series ofstean heated
digestors.
o Theundissolved
impurities such as sand
and iron oxide are
separated out in large
settling tanks.
o The resultingsolution or
nliquorn
is filtered, cooled
byheat exchangers and
nseeded"
with crystals of
aluminium hydroxide to
aid precipitation of
alumina hydrate.

The plant at Gove, with
annual output ofabout
1.6 million tonneg is one of
the world's largest alumina
producers. The refinery has
been desþed to be readily
e4pandedwhen demand
permits.

o The hydrate is then
filtered" washed and
passed through rotary
calciningkilns at
temperatures of up to
1,10trC to produce the
white powder, alumina.
Alumina ready for export is
stored in three concrete silos
- two holding 50,000 tonnes
each and one holding
100,000 tonnes.
Steam for the process is
supplied by a 112.5 megawatt
oil-fred stean power statioq
which also supplies electricity
for the plant, the torm of
Nhulunbuy and the nearby
Aboriþalsettlement of
Yirrkala. The calcination
kilns are also oil fired and
total use of imported fuel oil
exceeds 1,0(X) tonnes per day.
Another major input for the
pr(rcess is caustic soda, with
annual consumption
exceedi'g 100,000 tonnes.

3. TAKING IT TO THE WORLD
he port facilities
established by
Nabalco in Melville
Tlvo tugboats and a pilot
boat are used by Nabalco's
shipping personnel for vessel
movements at the export
wharf, tanker jetty and
general cargo wharf.
The bulk cargo wharf is
connected to the shore by a
982 metre long bridge. The
bauxite/alumina berth is on
the northern section of the
wharf, with the southern area
handling bulk liquids. Bulk
ore carriers ofup to 95,000
tonnes capacity can be loaded
at the port.
A separation of 305 metres is
providedbetween the
e:creme mooring dolphins at
both the bulk cargo andbulk
liquid bertbs for safety
reasons.
The bauxite/alumina berth is
equipped with a travelling
luffing shiploaderwith
telescopic trimming spout.
The outreach ofthe spout
from the fender line etrends
from 10 metres to 31 metres.
Travel along the berth is 164
metres.
A plant oonveyor s)'stem
transports product from the
refinerysilos to the
shiploader. Loading capacþ
is ZnO tonnes per hour.
Wharf facilities are also
provided for side and front
loading barges. Oit liquid
caustic soda and petroleum
products are pumped from
vessels at the tank jetty to
their relevant storage tanks.
Sea transportation consists of
regular barge services from
Darwin, bringing food
supplies and general cargo.
Bay are used for ft¿¡dling
alumina and bauxite, general
cargo andbulk liquids.
A natural harbour for
ocean-going vessels, the bay
offers a good anchoragewith
depths of up to 14.6 metres.
Pilotage ofvessels is carried
out byNabalco's oum
fully-qualified master
mariners.
