Rail Budget 2016:
* No hike in passenger fares as Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu presents this year's Rail
Budget ; Announces, slew of reforms in areas of passenger amenities including over 65,000
additional berths, senior citizens seat quota up by fifty per cent; Wi-Fi services at 100
stations, safer means for women travelers and CCTV surveillance at all major stations.
* Mr Prabhu says, core objective is to make railways an engine of employment generation and
economic growth at national level; to generate 9 crore man-days employment in next two
years.
* Proposes plan size of one lakh twenty one thousand crore rupees in 2016-17.
* Announces, fully unreserved superfast Antyodaya Express for common man on dense
routes; High speed Tejas trains to operate; Overnight double decker trains to run on busiest
routes; New dedicated corridors for freight.
* Under Make In India initiative two locomotive factories worth of 40,000 crore rupees to be
set up; 50 crore rupees fund for promoting innovation, startups and small businesses.
* Under modernisation process, two thousand eight hundred kilometres broad gauge lines to
be commissioned; Mizoram and Manipur to come on broad gauge map for better connectivity
to North Eastern States.
