1. MATALA’s self-titled inaugural event is a new chapter of the
experimental sound and performance space Mata Gallery that ran
for three years in Mid-City Los Angeles. Artists and performers
working with video have submitted work showcasing their magical
struggles & triumphs as women-identified artists of color. The
objective with this series is to create a platform for POC, women
and queer artists coming from different art communities to access
each other’s work. Through connectivity this platform will allow
artists creating from all different access points -- DIY communities,
gallery systems, large institutional support -- to showcase together
and to allow artists and viewers to see themselves reflected in the
work of others.
“Rise” is an experimental, interactive video sculpture comprised of
multiple moving panels that come together to create an evolving
video screen and visual experience. Sculptors and MATALA
curators Myra Dingley, Maria Garcia & Erin Bates sought to create
a sculpture that interacted with their video submissions while
capturing MATALA’s underlying values of community, the strength
of diversity and the results of artists joining forces to work
together. The sculpture represents the experiences we encounter,
the beauty of diversity and the layers that spill over one another to
create something new. Viewers will be able to walk around and
within the panels of the sculpture, experiencing video projections
from multiple vantage points and perspectives.
