6. Workspaces
The digital art community is quite large and diverse, in
order to learn what kind of environment professional
artists work in is very accessible. They share photos of
their workspace online, which gave me great insights.
Art Process Analysis
Every artist has a unique approach to their tasks, so
I went through dozens of process recordings (called
speedpaintings) to collect the most commom used tools
and actions and divided them into different priority
sections. With that information I could determine how
many functions my product had to cover.
Interview
I also had the opportunity to chat with a designer,
who also does a lot of digital art and uses a gaming
keypad with custom mapping.

„It‘s meant for painting quickly without hesitation and having to look at
any keyboards ...been using this keymap for almost ten years“
„...also the 2 buttons on the Cintiq stylus is right click to pick and choose
brushes and space bar to move the canvas around“
7. The industry is aware of that problem, so a few interesting
peripherals targeted towards artists hit the market recently.
Wacom ExpressKey Remote
A wireless controller with programable buttons that can cover
over 20 functions. In addition, a touch-sensivite ring can be
bound to control such things as the brush size, canvas rotation
or canvas zoom. The device is quite compact and packs a lot of
buttons into a small footprint, but sacrifices ergonomics.
Pallet Gear
A modular system of buttons, sliders and knobs that offers a lot
of customization and works for many softwares. But it takes up
a lot of space on the desk for the controls it gives, the chosen
layout loses its efficiency when you switch the software and the
overall system is quite expensive.
Microsoft Surface Dial
The Surface Dial is a capacitive pug, that can be placed on
the Microsoft Surface Studio. an All-in-one computer with pen
input. It can be positioned freely and opens up a new way to
enhance the artists workflow with a combination of hardware
and software interface. The downside are the limited controls
you get, so you have to scroll if you want to use the Dial with a
lot of functions.

+
Graphic Tablets
The most essential input device when it comes to digital
art is the digital pen. Most of them are pressure and
tilt sensitive and offer a far more precise and faster
experience than any mouse ever could for that purpose.
But the pen alone is not enough to control all the common
used tools and funtions in a software. Therefore the
keyboard or programable keys are needed.
8. Gaming Kepads
So what do digital artists actually use to access their tools
and funtions within their software quickly? Most would just
use the keyboard with its shortcuts from the software. But
this setup lead to a lot of ergonomic problems.
But in the collection of workspace pictures I could see
that another piece of hardware was often used, so called
gaming keypads. These offer some key advantages:
+ avoid button combinations, due to key mapping
+ small footprint, can be placed next to graphic tablet
+ hand doesn‘t need to be moved to reach all buttons
+ ergonomic palm rest
Since these products are targeted towards gamers how
could a ergonomic keypad specialized for digital artists
look like?

strenuous it can be to work thousands of
meters under ground level, Dräger arranged
a tour through the Kali+Salz salt mine and
the RAG training site in Recklinghausen.
We had to carry the equipment every worker

In the end we got a great overview of how
the daily routines are and what kind of
struggles may occur working underground.

38. During our research in the mine we found out,
that in order to clear all areas after detonating,
workers had get close to the gas. So they
either had to use gas detectors in their hands
or attached to cars to spot any dangerous
chemicals. This is not only dangerous, but also
takes up a lot of time in a shift.
