Dear Sir or Madam,
I am enthusiastic about applying for an opportunity with your company as an in the area of environmental engineering. This is the line
of work that I plan to make a career out of, especially where water is involved. I feel that my education and experience up to this point
have prepared me well for the responsibilities of an Environmental Technician. Over the past eight years I have earned a 2-year
diploma at Okanagan college in Water quality and environmental engineering technology, worked at a wastewater treatment plant for
3 years, worked towards a 4-year bachelor’s degree at BCIT in Environmental Engineering Technology, and volunteered overseas. I
am now seeking to find steady employment with a company who shares my values of promoting health, safety and a sustainable
environment. I am passionate about protecting the natural environment, especially where people depend on it directly for their health;
working with your team will allow me to put my education, experience, and passion to good use. I also am excited to work under
someone more experienced who I can learn from.
My recent history includes a six-month volunteer work term in Uganda with a small Canadian NGO called Africa Community
Technical Service (ACTS); during which I participated in the design and basic construction management of several gravity- flow
water distribution systems. I also contributed to several progress reports and project proposals, and regularly updated the team’s water
source database with data gathered in the field. One of my favorite tasks was testing potential water sources, which involved traveling
by truck and on foot in steep, rugged terrain and unpredictable weather, locating and exposing the center of the spring, measuring the
flow, and collecting water samples for transport back to the camp. The work environment there was very positive; a close-knit team of
people from very different backgrounds, with diverse skills, working together with integrity to provide a major benefit to the local
community. After returning to Canada, I returned to BCIT in Burnaby and completed my final semester of classes in the Bachelor's
Degree of Environmental Engineering Technology program. In this program, I chose the Water and Earth specialization over the
Energy and Air option, in order to build on my college education and my wastewater treatment work experience. The only
requirement I have left to fulfill in order to earn my Bachelor’s degree is to carry out an applied research project, which will be aimed
at solving a problem or exploring an opportunity. I plan to do this research on my own time, alongside this job if possible, and I
believe that this is a valuable added service I could offer on a volunteer basis.
I have a working knowledge of traverse survey instruments, handheld GPS units, groundwater monitoring well sampling devices, and
water sampling and field-testing equipment. I have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and a clean driving record, and I am willing to
travel, as the job requires. I am competent in the use of common computer programs, including Word and Excel. My BCIT courses
have given me plenty of practice with preparing and delivering presentations, and I am comfortable speaking to an audience; I also
enjoy teaching others, and have tutored informally. I am enthusiastic about this opportunity to gain valuable work experience in my
chosen field, to grow and develop my skills, and to contribute meaningfully to a great team. I am currently willing and able to begin
work as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your consideration; I hope to
hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Eric Speight
