Fossils
Discussion what is a fossil, types of fossils, how formed, how to identify, and
environmental information learned from fossil assemblages. (Optional: discussion of ages
and geologic time scale.) Examples to show and most samples students can handle. Many
samples from local area. Students can search for shark’s tooth/fossil in bin. Samples
given to teachers as available.
Time: one class period (approximately 1 hr) cost $30.00
Rocks
Discussion of what a rock is, types of rocks, how formed, how to identify, and earth
history learned from rocks. (Optional: discussion of radiometric dating and age of earth.)
Examples to show and most samples students can handle. Many samples from local area.
Samples given to teachers and students as available.
Time: one class period (approximately 1 hr) cost $30.00
Minerals
Discussion of what a mineral is, criteria for determining a mineral from other substances,
types of minerals, how formed, how to identify, and economic uses for minerals.
Examples to show and most samples students can handle. Many samples from local area.

Time: one class period (approximately 1 hr) cost $30.00
Weathering and soil formation
Discussion of different types of weathering of rocks, decomposition products of some
rock forming minerals, and the components of soil. Examples to show. Presenter will
make some Georgia red soil for class. Students will paint with different colors of Georgia
clay.
Time: one class period (approximately 1 hr) cost $30.00
Bones
Discussion of bones and their function in the vertebrate body. Large book illustrations,
and samples of animal skulls and bones, some of which students can handle. Hopefully
available soon is entire deer skeleton students can put together. For elementary school
children: a felt board activity on human body placing the proper bones onto “Mr. Bones”.
Samples given to teachers as available.
Time: one class period (approximately 45min) cost $30.00
Colonial artifacts
Discussion and show and tell of American colonial artifacts from Charleston, South
Carolina. The artifacts are primarily English imports and date from the late 1600’s –
c.1810. Most artifacts cannot be directly handled by students, but some can. Artifacts
include: fragments of bottles, plates, cups, smoking pipes, eating utensils, and misc other
everyday items. Also included in presentation are some period reproduction items. Two
page paper with pictures and explanations created by presenter provided upon request.
Time: one class period (approximately 1 hr) cost $30.00
Workshops
Dating bottles
This workshop deals with identifying and dating bottles and bottle fragments from
historical archeological sites. Includes discussion of: 1. Manufacturing techniques, 2.
Bottle styles, and 3. Manufactures marks. Associated date ranges for all 3 discussed.
Bonus: Coke bottle dating. Mainly deals with the time period from 1860-1980, but some
examples discussed predating this time. Examples, most of which can be handled.
Includes a 3 page bottle dating cheat sheet created by presenter.
Time 30-45 min cost $20 1-2 people $30.00 small group
Identifying and dating ceramic wares
This workshop deals with the identification and dating of ceramic wares from historical
archeological sites in Georgia. Most Examples that can be handled. Time period mainly
covered is from 1700- 1920. Includes printout of history of ceramic wares in the CSRA
and cheat sheet created by presenter for dating historical ceramic wares covered in work
shop. Optional: Native American pottery from central Savannah river area. This
workshop is a work in progress.
Time 30 min cost $20.00

For teachers. Worshops on rocks, minerals, and/or fossils. All the material in the student
presentations will be covered plus extra. Will include rock, mineral and fossil
identification. Information can be tailored to specific needs and or questions. Workshops
designed to help teaches understand the basics so they feel comfortable teaching the
subject. Can include some basics of geology.
Time: negotiable cost: negotialable

Archeological Dig with real 20th
century artifacts in sandbox. Whole project would take
1-2 weeks. Ask about details.
