CONE OF SILENCE PROJECT
ERIC JORDAN & JACK MILLER
OBJECTIVE
Our objective is to reduce the amount of sound that is
produced by the Relco Atom Flash Cut Flex. The noise is
both an annoying and a potentially harmful problem for the
employees in the workplace .
INITIAL RESEARCH TESTING
Using a sound pressure level meter we collected data on the different
decibel levels at different distances from the machine.
AUDIO DATA AND
RESEARCH
The sound pressure level meter allows taking readings
of decibel levels near the Relco flash cut machine as
well as frequency response, reoccurring variance and will
Calculate data in 7 different mode settings.
DATA
• This data is then inserted into an
audio software to find the source
of the problem and determine
background noise, frequency
peaks, and quantization of all
data taken.

Decibel levels
{ Reading Options } C-weighted level is higher than the A-Weighted taking into account the
amount of low-frequency noise it will pick up. Note: Lo: 30~100dB; Hi: 60~130dB. Note: slow
mode checks average of fluctuating noise, Fast mode response is for fast varying noise.

WHEN RECORDING THE MACHINE THE HARMFUL DIVERGING SOUND
WAVES ARE FOUND BETWEEN 3,000HZ AND 7,000HZ. THESE
FREQUENCIES ARE KNOWN AS THE HIGH SHELF FREQUENCIES AND
MAKE THE MAJORITY OF THE SOUND WITH MINIMAL LOW FREQUENCY
RESPONSE . THESE TWO PEAKS SHOW THE FREQUENCIES THAT THE

ENCLOSURE SYSTEM
1” ALUMINUM T-SLOT PIECES ARE CUSTOM CUT FROM THE
MEASURED DIMENSIONS AND CONNECTED BY BRACKETS TO
CREATE A LIGHT YET DURABLE FRAME THAT RECREATES THE

SOUND DEADENING MATERIAL
This design weighs 25 pounds that sits on top of the head
which
Moves with it. Cuts decibel levels by an average of 14 decibels,
but is not as functional with additional added weight. This may
Effect the inertia movement, bearing wear, and overall function
ability
yet it is small, versatile, and serves the sound depletion
problem.
