2. 3Modular Masters in Formulation Science and Technology
Introduction
Traditionally, organisations have found
it a challenge to develop employees
with the right skill set for scientific,
technical and production functions at all
levels, from vocational to professional in
formulation science.
In response, the Science Industry
Partnership (SIP) has developed a Modular
Masters programme in Formulation Science
and Technology to provide specialist CPD
that can build into a full Masters upon
completion of 180 credits of learning. This
will provide individuals with the specialist
knowledge that employers seek. The
Modular Masters has been designed to
be flexible in order to meet the needs of
individuals in the Formulation Industry.

Features of the
Modular Masters
The Modular Masters is suitable for
employees in all industries engaged in
some aspect of formulation or seeking to
enhance their knowledge of formulation.
In this innovative programme modules can
be studied as CPD or ‘banked’ leading
towards a postgraduate certificate (60
credits), diploma (120 credits) or a full
Masters qualification on completion of a
project (180 credits).
Modules are worth between 10 and 20
credits and can be chosen from:
Foundation Modules which provide
the essential scientific foundation to
understand formulated products and
formulation processes.
Core Modules which provide
further scientific depth and introduce
industrially important technological
topics.
Specialised Modules which in
general focus on detailed technological
topics of interest to specific industries
engaged in formulation.
Typically students studying for the full
Masters will be required to choose at
least two modules from a choice of four
Foundation modules and at least two
modules from a choice of eleven Core
modules. The rest of the modules may be
chosen freely from Foundation, Core and
Specialised. There are currently eleven
Specialised modules available and more
may be added depending on student and
employer demand.
Students wishing to complete the full
Masters will be required to complete
a research project supervised by a
participating university/provider that is
tailored to the needs of the business.
The project is worth 60 credits and will be
assessed by dissertation.
Those wishing to pursue CPD only (i.e.
without a formal qualification) may choose
freely from the full selection of modules.
Benefits of the
Modular Masters
The Modular Masters is an ideal
opportunity for employees to develop their
skills in all aspects of Formulation Science
Suitable for a wide range of participants

cogentskills.com
2 You will then be provided with
a Module Booking Form, which
confirms your requirements.
3 Learners will be required
to complete a university
application. Cogent Skills
will forward the relevant
documentation and guidance
notes once the Module
Booking Form has been
completed and returned.
4 Once the learner has been
accepted onto the module
and payment details received,
Cogent Skills will send out
module joining instructions.
Length
Typically a student will take three to five
years of part-time study to complete the full
Masters.
Costs
Fees per 10 credit module are likely to be
in the region of £770
The overall cost for the full Masters
programme will be in the region of £11,000
Funding
£1.2 million in Government co-investment
will be available to approximately 2,400
science-based industry employees until
December 2016. This is offered through
the Science Industry Partnership (SIP).
Individuals may be able to access up
to 50% of the cost of a single module
completed for their development. For

Modules currently available
The below modules are currently available
for registration. Any credits earned from
these modules can be carried forward
and integrated into the full Masters
programme. Details of further modules
will be announced during 2015 which will
comprise the full Masters Programme.
Students wishing to pursue the full Masters
are not obliged to sign up immediately for
all of these modules. The modules may
also be taken as CPD by students not
wishing to pursue a formal qualification.
Design Principles
for Formulation and
R&D Methodology
Core Module
De Montfort University
This module is designed to give an
overview of the important concepts
associated with experimental design
and research methods. The module
draws analogies between improving
industrial processes with every day
generic examples. Students are actively
encouraged to take part in improving
a chemical process using a simulation
program provided by GSK. The module
shows how to work with data to find useful
new insights.
Characterisation
for Formulation
Core Module
University of Birmingham
The Characterisation for Formulation
module examines a wide variety of
techniques that are important for
characterising the structure and quality of
formulated products and the processes
used to make them. Micromanipulation,
positron emission particle tracking, particle
image velocimetry and dynamic vapour
sorption are just some of the methods
studied. The module concentrates on
techniques that students have not been
exposed to at undergraduate level and the
main emphasis is on characterisation of the
microstructure of a product.
Preformulation Studies:
Biopharmaceutical
aspects of dosage
form
Specialised Module
University of Manchester
Physicochemical aspects of drug
substances and excipients will be the
focus of this module. It explains the
need for preformulation and a number of
solubility parameters will be discussed
including intrinsic solubility, dissolution
rate, pKa and salts, solvents and partition
coefficients. The thermal properties of
drug candidates as well as the concept
of stability will be explained, including
degradation mechanisms, stability
assessment and inhibition.
Colloid Chemistry
and Rheology
Core Module
University of Birmingham
This module provides an in depth study
of the world of colloidal systems and
their industrial importance. The course
concentrates on three main systems,
namely suspensions, emulsions and foams
and in particular concentrates on how the
interparticle forces control the structure
of the colloidal system and their industrial
importance. Rheology, which is the study
of how materials deform and flow, will also
be covered in detail. The emphasis of the
course is on how interparticle forces control
the structure of colloidal systems and
understanding how the processing of a fluid
affects its structure, stability and function on
both a micro and macroscopic scale.

Foundation Modules
These provide the essential scientific foundation
to understand formulated products and
formulation processes. Choose from:
Process Engineering Fundamentals for
Formulators
Bioscience for Formulators
Pharmaceutical Pre-formulation and
Formulation
Industrial Chemistry
“I recently undertook the Colloid Chemistry and
Rheology module at Birmingham University. I
have been an industrial fluids formulator for
over 7 years and my company specialises
in emulsions and neat oil formulations. The
module was split into numerous topics
including emulsion science and rheology, both
of which were particularly pertinent to my
career, and the delivery of the module was
paced well. One particular section I found
useful was regarding polymer stabilisation of
emulsion systems which I have been able to
apply to my work. I am already scheduled to
take the next module on Characterisation for
Formulation and will hopefully be completing
the full Masters qualification.”
