“Opening Up to Emotionality”
Symbolic Exploration of the Anima, and the internal Judge in Forensic
Sandplay Therapy
Emma Allen and Jo Sellam have introduced Jungian Sandplay Therapy into both high and low
secure settings where they will present case material from both assessment and treatment.
The presentation will explore the use and application of Jungian symbology; exploring two
symbols and psychological concepts around the theme of ‘judgment’ and ‘justice’ through the
‘Judge’(restoring order and providing justice) and the archetypal symbol of ‘The Statue of
Liberty’ (enlightener, illuminator, and upholder of justice). Their role within psychic
development and their symbolic relationship to the offender client group will be explored
through examining a selection of Sandplay Therapy trays. The anima development for the male
offender will be particularly explored, introducing Jungian approaches to the psyche and
archetypal symbol formation.
The presentation aims to highlight the differences between Art Therapy and Sandplay Therapy
and assist other arts therapists in utilising a symbolic approach to forensic psychotherapy.
Emma Allen is an HCPC Registered Art Psychotherapist and a Sandplay Therapist in Training,
and has been working at Rampton Hospital, high secure hospital since 2009. She has established
Sandplay Therapy in both Rampton Hospital, and on arson treatment programmes that include
The Wells Road Centre, Nottingham.
Jo Sellam is an HCPC Registered Art Psychotherapist and a member of the Association of
Sandplay Therapists. Jo has been working in medium and low secure settings since 2002 and has
set up Sandplay Therapy at Wolfson House Recovery Centre in London.
